Do any of our US members use hemp or cocoliner?

I don't, but I'm thinking about making the switch. I found this on Amazon (24" by 33'). Shipping is $16, but total it's only around $55. I could be wrong, but that seems reasonable to me.

Just saw there is a California Prop 65 warning on the material from this seller. So this probably wouldn't be a good option. Oops!

Good thing you saw that warning, Hpdegus! I wonder if there are insecticides or some such chemical in it. Not worth the risk for the goobers.

For sure! I didn't know what the Prop 65 warning was until I started reading the comments. I think someone mentioned it may be sprayed down before leaving for the US. I should have known cheap cocoliner was to good to be true!

Everything is known to the STate of California to cause cancer. All of us in other states joke about that.
However...some cocomat is indeed sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals to make it last longer. But not all.
You can get it quite cheaply at your local garden center or farm supply shop (like an Agway). They commonly carry it in the spring and summer months, not so much fall and winter because no one uses it then. it costs just a few dollars a linear foot, and is usually 3 feet wide, so it is quite cheap. I can usually find it for no more than $3 a linear foot, so buying a piece that is 4 feet long x the 36" wide roll is only $12.
When I would buy it, I go and not only look at it (it can vary in thickness and density and quality) but then I would smell it. Sniff deeply. If it smells like chemicals, DON'T BUY IT. It should smell just like musty dusty coconut hulls. Never had a problem with any cocomat I selected based on my smell test.
Because of the seasonality of it, you just have to stock up and buy extra when the stores have it, because they put it away by fall.
Another way to get pieces of cocomat for making huts and features and things is to buy the liners made for wire baskets and window boxes. I have bought them in dollar stores. Again, they carry them in the spring mostly, so I stock up when I can find them. Just make sure they pass the sniff test--smell like dusty coconut hull, no chemical or perfume smell.

Very very true, Winic!
Good tips, I'll have to start looking soon, since it's already February. I dont know if we have Agway, but we have plenty of greenhouse shops nearby.

To order some and be sure it's pesticide/chemical-free, you would search for "organic coconut hull mats" or something similar, but put the word "organic" into it. They evidently now use this stuff for hydroponic gardens, but also sell much of it for home use growing wheatgrass for juicing, etc. It seems to get more pricey if you buy it that way (what doesn't if it's 'green", "healthy", "organic") but with a bit of looking you could probably find a good deal. I saw one listing that the price of the stuff was good, 4'x4'x8' for $30, but it the store was in California and so the shipping was another $26!
They also seem to call the stuff "Coir" as well as cocomat.

Haha, I'm originally from Alaska, so my wishful thinking has me believing that the beginning of March is spring time! winic1 I hate when that happens. Shipping can be absolutely absurd!
