Hi I was wondering if I could get some advice please! I currently use woodchippings for the base of my degus cage but due to the mess it makes I am considering changing to hemp floor mats. However I'm concerned with the hygiene of them? As they are quite costly I don't want to be replacing them weekly when I clean my boys cage out properly. Thankyou in advance for any help!

Hi,
There are lots of different options out there. I've only used hemp mats on some shelving. You're quite right, it will soak up wee, and I'm not sure if they can be washed.
I personally switched to equine woodshavings. They're much bigger, and I've found it greatly reduces the mess. The degus love them too, and they have a chewing fest! You can find these at tack shops. I personally use Bedmax.
An alternative is to modify your cage by cutting perspex (so they can still see through) to fix onto the outside of the bars using perhaps wire. Make it perhaps 15cm deep, and for each level.

Or you can use softwood to make edges for your shelves too. What kind of cage do you have?
We do have members who have used hemp liners and similar products and they seem to quite like them, I think some of them you can split into two to reduce the cost and they can be shaken and brushed out for reuse. I think suitability depends on the habits of your degus, if they have potty areas where you can put trays/saucers/tiles down then that would help, but if you have avid nest builders they sometimes ruffle and dig up the hemp and make a complete mess of it.
