Came across this when I was looking for a video example of the metal laufradschmiede - I guess wheel forge would be the best translation(?) - wheels in use ( laufradschmiede.de/preisliste ). Pricey, but pretty and the only wheels I can find over 16". In a different video she has one of these wheels, but I saw the cage and it was drooling at first sight a palace for two degus! I also found some of the stuff she used to fill it with interesting - particularly those grass trays - and thought I'd share. Plus, past not understanding german I thought her initial video in the series does a fantastic job of showing how she built the thing End of the video shows the whole cage (approx 6:20).

Stunning cage!! Want to know how often she has to clean it out. How quickly do the degus go through two whole "bales?" of hay, and two large containers of bathing sand. I GASPED when I watched her pour those two bowls FULL of sand. LOL! I was never so generous with the bathing sand. Nor the hay. Also want to know if that brown stuff she smoothed over what looked like paper substrate was coconut mulch or dirt or what. In fact, it looked like she had three to four different substrates in total. A very interesting video!

The cage is stunning, such lucky goos! I too couldn't believe the sand, especially as I bet most of it gets kicked out of that bowl very quickly! The hay pile is absolutely awesome, would love to be able to do that with mine.

Really nice setup and ideas. One of the main points she was making in the video was that she was deliberatley using different substrate on each level, she thinks it encourages/ allows different behaviour and usage of each level, and so presumably encourages natural behaviour. The soil looking stuff she called 'earth' so must have been soil, she also said that was their main living level for many activities.
Just for info, she mentioned that some of the little houses etc she shows you on the table, some of those were smaller than she expected, she must have been caught out ordering online like must of us have been. She did say the goos still like the small stuff, eg, for standing on.
The spaciousness of the cage struck me, the nice feel you get when you can afford to allow generous headroom.
The wheel design looks familiar to a design Maravilla linked to us once, I wonder if it's the same design and person, I think we probably still have the link listed. I would probably translate as wheelsmith, although I have in the back of my mind there is a particular name for a person who makes wheels.
(I've added links in the cage build links thread and for the wheels in the accessories to buy thread.)

Thanka mole, thought you or bouncy might come to the rescue I think the fact that she painted the unit helped a lot with the brightness. Really given me some stuff to think about with my build when they happen! Don't think my tiny landfill bin every two weeks could take so much substrate though Yeah it is difficult to judge items at times, could have sworn I heard something that sounded roughly along the lines of "it's meant for hamsters" (perhaps at the maze house thing?) but figured that made sense when she said she was buying things from rodipet. Either way, I wish I had a rodent room now so the degus could have a multi-level palace like hers 😠S&W will be lucky to be one 2x0.6-0.8m level and a large partial level at this rate with the chin cage being so massive. And also half my living room window will be blocked if I go the full recommended 80 cm depth so I may need a perspex side to let light through (north facing window) *sigh*

My cage was just over 60 cm deep and I wouldn't have wanted it any deeper. Painted white on the other hand . . . a definite yes!!

Yeah, the maze was one of the smaller things, some of those smaller houses my lot would have loved for perching on and stashing stuff in, but I imagine mine would have just chewed away all the barriers in a maze. I loved the houses with the worktop type tops, I thought that was genius. I didn't watch much of the first video, did she say what she painted it with? I never regretted painting my cage, I just never recommended it that much because I can't say the paint I used is truly 'safe'. I bet that much bedding lasts for ages.
I'm sure you'll figure out the housing and you'll love having it all purpose built and to suit your home.

She has another video (same name, but Teil 1) of the actual build. I love the rodipet stuff, and have some. It comes in different sizes, and there's lots to choose from. Their flying saucer requires mod though, because it's not got enough angle. I think my lot would give the maze a miss because my lot would just munch through it to make a plain hut! I thought it was only the terracotta pot that was smaller than anticipated. I tried grass trays this year, but there wasn't really an interest. They sniffed, walked away, and ate hay! I'd love to see cleanout day, especially for the earth level! And I wonder how much of the sand and eating level was just waste? Oh deguconvert, the earth was reptile coconut stuff. I am glad someone gets through as much substrate as me, though! Just noticed Teil 3 - The one week review........

With sliding doors like that does it always have to be proper glass and not plexi? I love that design and how she has the plexi or glass barrier before the sliding openings
Makes me want to build... I have no money or skill so won't be doing that any time soon

She says she is using just water.
You can use plexiglass instead of glass. When people started building cages on here a few years ago, some people used plexiglass for sliding doors, I think it worked well enough but eventually most people wished they had used glass because I think the plexiglass gets scratched quite easily.

Yep,just water, but the board was protected upfront, and all joints sealed.
And the moral of the story? Check the overall height of a new wheel BEFORE ordering lol
Oh, and she and her goos are now on Instagram.

The protection stuff she used on the floor, do you think it could be use for wooden shelves or would it be bad for them to chew?

I think it depends on whether they could chew it. It's not the kind of thing you want them to ingest.
