Love the last photo with Maisie on the arch with a couple of babies Is Maisie still seeming more settled in the top of the cage?

Not really. We have a wooden floor covered in newspaper and then about 3 inches of wood shavings. She has dug away the wood shavings and torn the paper so that she is lying directly on the wood. She goes to the babies to feed them and then goes back to lie on the wood. But the babies look healthy and run around for a few minutes and then dive back into the house. I don't know whether she is sleeping with them or not. She is not in the house in the morning when I check them but she has probably heard me moving around already.

I have posted on a Finnish degu website, but if there are any Finnish members here I will be looking for homes for the boys. I think 3 but I will confirm when I get a better look.

Good news. I have had contact with a breeder here in Finland and she said to bring the babies to her and she will confirm the sexes and buy the boys. I have also mentioned the possibility of her taking Maisie too if I can't get them back together. I don't want to do this and am still hoping we can sort it but it is a back up plan if I need it. Polly and Rosie are getting on very well by themselves. But Maisie was out for just a few minutes while I cleaned and she was straight for Rosie and Rosie's front paw was bleeding. This is even though Rosie was inside the cage and could have moved away. At least I can relax a little knowing I have a good place for the boys.

You must feel reassured to have some options for the pups and Maisie

I've been thinking about what you posted, and knowing myself, I would have a deep sense of conflict over giving up Maisie . . . but I would likely be feeling that I need to protect the others as well, and that I must work within what I can (forcing myself to be realistic and not the usual dreamer that I am) actually do with the means I have at hand. Not an easy place to be, Christine. I'm so glad you have a place for the boys, and potentially for Maisie if she continues to be aggressive.
My hope is that once the pups are older she will relax her vigilance and once again be welcoming of the Polly and Rosie. I know that may well not happen, and am fully supportive of you.

I also weighed them and 3 were 24g, 1 25g, 1 26g and 1 27g. Do these weights sound ok for 8 days old. We do see Maisie feeding them but she also spends a lot of time away from them.

Next question. Can I put the snuggle safe in for the babies. I have just checked and Maisie is lying on a shelf and the babies are in a pile behind the house. I have been worried about them getting cold at night. Maisie is always out of the house in the morning but that could be because she hears someone coming. I not sure if they are better off sleeping alone inside the house or if I put the snuggle safe in I am sure Maisie will use it and they would join her there. Is it too warm for them. I have just read somewhere else that a new mum spends 80% of her time with the babies, but Maisie is only with them when they are feeding.

Maybe under-heat it a bit, so it's not up to full temperature, as babies might not know when to move off if they are too warm.

I think extra bedding material would be safer than a heatpad as babies cannot regulate their temperature properly for the first week or so. Deguconvert might know more.

It can take up to four weeks to regulate their own body temperatures fully. I would probably go with the snugglesafe pad, but not at full heat capacity as suggested by Winic, just because at this age it is probably more trouble if they become chilled than if they are a bit warm. I've often told people with new pups to be checking them often during the first four weeks to make sure they are all warm and there are no pups that feel cool to the touch. If Maisie is the minimalist she sounds like as far as spending time with her pups, then I would be doing a little extra, like the snugglesafe pad, to make sure they are keeping warm enough. As for their weights . . . I never weighed any of my pups, but am wishing now that I had, so that I could tell you what is pretty normal for this age. Do the pups look or sound desperate for time with Maisie when she comes near them? Are you worried they are not getting enough to eat?

Thanks ntg. Looks like mine are doing well weight wise. It could be that she is with them more than we think. She tends to come to the bars when someone goes near so maybe she just hears us coming.
