I've never had the issue of trying to keep them cool until this coming weekend! My plan is to put an gel ice pack under one side of the carry case I use (so not in with them) and a tile lining the bottom + possibly a well wrapped frozen bottle of water inside if they feel the need to lie against something cool. Air con if you've got it will be very welcome too! What sort of carry case do you have for them?

Hello and welcome! I would advise on a nice big pile of hay for them to hide in during the journey and some other secure hidey places (just make sure they are secure and won't be moving about) so they can feel safe if they are a bit shy. A couple of water bottles out of the sun and plenty of food and forage to keep them occupied. What you will probably find though is the degus will love the car journey and will be basking in the sun and looking out of the window a lot of the time if you have them in a cage. I recently took one of mine to the vet and I too was worried about the hot weather. The vet gave me a rubber glove filled with ice cubes to put on the travel case for the journey home which was effective, I saw her cuddled up to it on a few occasions but be wary this may chew this (degus chew everything!)

It's honestly not something I've had to think about before, because I put their carry case on the front seat and direct the a/c vent at them. Logically, though, I would put a ceramic tile in the freezer, provide shade with a box or tube, and keep the air circulating. If you happen to be in slow traffic, make sure you have the windows open, and consider doing this whilst driving too. Whilst the car glass won't be letting in much uvb, it will heat up the inside like a greenhouse. A sunroof is brilliant for drawing the hot air out.
I always take the drinking bottle off when the car is moving, because it ends up just emptying into the substrate. Make sure you offer it to them frequently, tho.

You must be so excited to collect them! Just make sure with a cat carrier the bar spacing is small enough for degus - they can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps and you don't want them running loose around the car en route. The tiles sounds like a great idea

My thoughts exactly, Misscatafer. And just so you know, Kyzzie, bars that are anything wider in spacing than 1.5 cm are too wide, degus will walk right through.
