Mine do as well Peanut intensely watches me in the mornings to see if I will put some in the cage, and if I do he comes rushing down and does these cute little popcorns on the middle shelf

All my fur bairns are on their christmas holidays! S&W have taken up their usual cage for the next two weeks while Giz and Benj are in the dreaded thickets cage. Fortunately, my brother has lent me his playpen he got for his two chinbutts so they aren't entirely stuck in it for the next two weeks. Just wanted to show you what it looks like to have two chins in one of them... Almost tempted to leave the playpen out permanently if I could trust them in it they're straight to the door if I open it as if to say "We're coming out, right?!" so going to have to make sure the door is closed whenever I need to go into it

Not a great deal of space is there.

Not a great deal of space is there. Whatever do you mean? You can fit another two in there Two short hops and they're at the end of the cage Benj bites the bars in the aventura to get out so not looking forward to what he has in store for me since we're sharing the room Disclaimer: I don't seriously recommend four chinchillas in a thickets cage. Wouldn't even keep two in there long-term. Been dreading having to do it for the holidays since they're used to over double the amount of space.

Last Christmas I had to have b&h in a thickets cage for 4 nights I think it was... I felt so bad for them they completely trashed it within hours of being in there as a dirty protest lol. And to think some goos/chins live in them permenantly

Almost one week in and its bizarre, they seem to have just reverted to not moving at all in the small cage. Usually I'd see them move napping spots throughout the day from the top to the bottom of the cage whereas they just sit there all day and practically most of the night. They only really become animated when I feed them or let them out. I think the poor bairns will be happy when they get home. May have to invest in a bigger holiday cage for next year!

Poor loves! Can't imagine how mind numbing it must be to be in such a small space. For all animals in such small spaces without extended time outside of it daily.

They only really become animated when I feed them or let them out. I think the poor bairns will be happy when they get home. May have to invest in a bigger holiday cage for next year! That's what I found with Dame Maggie Smith when she got here. The cage she was in was a bit bigger than a Thickitts but not by much. She spent all day in her igloo except when she ate. The owner said she was "old & depressed" & she thought she wouldn't live much longer. She said she thought that a bigger cage was a bad idea & that Maggie would struggle to find her way around. Soon as I put Maggie in she found her way around, she loves all the space. Within a week she'd began moving around more, doing more. She started foraging & playing with toys which she hadn't before. Now, her behaviour isn't any different from any other chinchilla. I see her snoozing in various locations throughout the day too, she makes use of all the space. She isn't at all depressed & she seems really happy. I really don't see any evidence for the argument that some breeders/owners put forward that chins need small cages or it's somehow dangerous - I've only ever seen evidence of the exact opposite. Wouldn't it be nice if they could understand it's only temporary?! I suppose the upside is that they'll be reminded how lucky they are when they get back home

I reckon this must be why people with small cages think they are fine, because the cages are so small the chins never really move about. We've seen the same thing with degu cages, people don't think they need to upgrade but when they do their degus suddenly come alive. Maybe the breeders etc have never tried a bigger cage so they haven't seen the difference for themselves? It's so sad.

Yep I've seen a few people with both chinchillas and degus saying they didn't believe that degus need a bigger space than the thickets cage as well *sigh* I just don't think they're willing to discuss what's best since there is only one way as far as they're concerned...
