Nice idea about the toys. Can you give some examples? (links, photos etc..) They are chewing the edging, but only on that one floor, because it is made out of solid wood and not plywood. They do not like plywood. I might just replace everything with it i guess... But they like that one spot so much that i fear they will eat anything i put there I will make a few photos when i get home today.

Chewing the edging is a passionate pastime of at least 90% of degus. They just can't avoid or stop it. They are literally DRIVEN to chew edging. LOL! I laugh, but I am serious. Basically you have three choices. 1. Distract by placing other things in front of the area they are chewing. Either toys, or something heavy they can't move, or bigger blocks of the wood they love that are easy to put in when a new one is needed. 2. Cover the top edges of your edges with metal that you can screw on and will block the chewing. 3. Accept that the damage is going to happen, and figure out a way to easily replace the edging when it is too damaged to be of any use anymore.

I completely forgot to reply about my idea how to get around the problem. I added extra wooden planks to chew. Those are very easy to replace Also, the leftovers from previous degu destruction were added as well.

Another photo. 1MB size limitation for attachments, is this forum from 1998 or something?

Ah yes, I had to go with a similar solution. I was intially nailing the extra wood in, but was nervous about the long term effects that would have on the cage. I eventually constructed a bracket for the chew wood.

glad you found a solution. You need to use a photo hosting site for photos and then use the links to display them here, we only have 200mb local storage for the whole forum for photos or there's a monthly fee to have more, but as a small group we couldn't sustain that.
