Not sure if this belongs here but I wanted to talk about where everyone actually keeps their degu cages, I had them in my bedroom (not the easiest place) but now I have convinced my mum to let me rent the spare room for my two degus and they love it! I don't have to worry about them chewing my bed.
It's so nice not having to worry so much about them ruining anything, we have an old sofa which we don't mind if they chew but they haven't so far. I wanted to try the Velcro and wood to save the skirting boards but ours are laid out weirdly so I have left it for now.
I wanna know where you guys keep your cages and if they can free roam in that room or not and if you have any tips on saving furniture?

My girls are in my front room. They don’t get to roam freely as there is too much for them to chew and as I live in an old terraced house, there are too many little gaps for them to squeeze into.
I use a run I made myself so they have free time out of the cage but can’t do any damage.

We have a tiny apartment, about 800 sq/ft. They are in our living room, pretty much dead in the middle of the apartment. There's really nice things about that like getting to watch them pretty much all the time that we are home and awake. We catch the most adorable or funny things sometimes because of that.
The downside is they are right in the middle of all major movement paths. So they end up jumping/squeaking/hiding perhaps a bit more. Get off the couch to refill a drink - make them jump. Go from the bedroom to the bathroom - that's a jump. I mean they have gotten used to us and they (mostly) aren't scared of us, it just is pure instinct for them to scatter if something moves. I've thought about moving them, but there just is no other spot for them in this small place given the furniture that we have.
We can't let them roam free at all, we use a playpen for outside time. With them being in the living room, compounded with us having a lot of technology (computers, projector, speakers) there's wires pretty much running all along the floors at the perimeter of the room. Also our giant sectional couch is juuuuust tall enough that they could squeeze under it. At that point we would have to dissemble the whole thing to get them out. So outside time absolutely needs a playpen given our set up.

Mine are in the lounge, I spend most of the day in there so they always have their hooman slave on hand.
They have a playpen which I've yet to set up but they have a large cage so have plenty to do.

My cages are kept in the kitchen (yes, really). Each evening, I let one group out, then the other. The floor is a mess, but it's only the floor. Funnily enough, if I'm not sat on the floor with them, they take themselves back in.

Funnily enough, if I'm not sat on the floor with them, they take themselves back in. Our girls significantly prefer us to be with them for playpen time. If we leave the playpen, they often will mosey back into the cage, but if we come back they will come out again.

I also live in an apartment, which is open plan. So my degus are in our lounge/kitchen and study. It is great that they are with us all day and get a good view of what we are up to. I also have a permanent play pen in there (yes, it is quite a big room) which they use every day. We don't sit with them, but it is up against the back of the sofa and next to the computer, so they usually get a view of one of us... Even if it is just the back of our heads! I always know when it is 'home time' for them as the rustling and movement stops and I'll find them patiently waiting for their taxi tub ride back to the cage.

I love the floor protection, doubling as litter trays under the goo residence

misscatafer I love your apartment! It’s beautiful! Mine have their own room, but it’s not degu safe so they can’t have free roam of it - lucky for them as the cat breaks in and loves to watch them so imagine the fun she’d have if they were loose lol! Nothing makes them squeak really other than recently someone moved in opposite and they can see them in their kitchen out of the window so they’re all a bit jumpy from that!

Thanks! The trays under the cage are ikea, they are good for protecting the floor. Mine squeak at keys, the front door, people walking past the front door, the window cleaner and occasionally our mobile phones.. They are a brilliant security system!

Mine are in the living room, my dad's (and my old group) are/were in what used to be my old bedroom before I moved out.
I much prefer them in a living space than a bedroom/their own room as they get a lot more interaction with people that way and they really do provide extra entertainment on a daily basis! They still might not be in a permanent spot since redecorating is never-ending but at the moment they have quite a nice set up with a 2.1x0.9m playpen attached to a liberta explorer modded with an extra full level alongside the standard two levels and two half-levels for a pair.

misscatafer i love your apartment! What cages do you have? They look super nice bouncy I've watched your videos of yours playing and they are so spoilt with how much room they get, it's sweet they only come out to see you degulover21 do you have any troubles with them being in your room? zenaida what playpen do you use? That was my biggest trouble with Dave as when she was in the living room she also couldn't just have the room and i found a wooden wire pen with a top but I couldn't get in with her without lifting the top off

Try making a playpen. Pieces of hardboard are sufficient, and you don't need a lid if you make the sides high enough
