Actually, I'm going to make some more changes in the material and sizing of the cage. The main material is going to be coated white MDF board, so degus pee won't soak into the walls (Like I did in my hamsters cage - no smell at all). Cage wire on the sides and the top cover, and two glass panels in the doors. What about finish on the shelves inside? Is there something pet-safe I can use to paint them, so pee won't soak in and degus could chew on it?

For paint you can use something like the plasti kote clear enamel. They offer coloured versions too!

Can't see your photo/3d model at all. Photobucket has gone all "give us your money" and won't host pictures until you do. Exorbitant amount!
Was looking for the thread where we have suggested sites to look into for hosting your photos . . . but can't find it. In the process I have realized that we really need to remove the how to post using photobucket from the stickies! There will be someone that can direct you though.
I think Imagr (IS that right?) is one that is being used?

Posted it on Imgur So like I said: Glass on the front, cage wire on the sides and on the cover on top. I think it will look nice with these white mdf boards I found acrylic enamel, that some people on Polish degu forum recommended. HERE. Its for painting wooden toys for kids, they said on the forum that its ecologic, acrylic and food grade enamel paint and no odor.

Looks good! How many levels are you having and what are the dimensions?
When you use the acrylic paint you may have to leave it for awhile to offgas so it doesn't effect your goos breathing. It should be fine after 2 or so days in a room with good ventilation.

Dimensions: Lenght: 100 cm Depth: 50 cm Height: 180 cm There is going to be 5 levels; one 45cm, one 40 cm and the rest is going to be 30 cm I'll leave the paint for 72 hours, thought it says on the can 48h. Better safe than sorry lol

OK . . . as I was reading your list of dimension, it suddenly occurred to me that there are different ways to understand something like the list of levels. Do you mean the distance between one level to the next, or do you mean the depth of each level? I'm thinking you mean distance.

Sorry, didn't really specify. Yes, I meant the distance lol

It will look really smart with the white panelling, and you shouldn't have any fall out! Is it just going to be two vertical door openings the full height of the cage? That might cause a possible escape issue if you are doing something at the top /middle for example, and before you know it they are at the bottom and jumping out.

misscatafer I didn't thought about that! But I changed these doors anyways, glass panel would be to fragile and too heavy to have it on the full height of the cage. So, now I have 2 doors on the upper half, and two doors on the lower half of the cage. And yes, I did it to prevent any fall out, also levels inside will have borders to stop bedding from falling through the cage wire on the sides!

That sounds better they are master escape artists!

You can use melamine coated furniture board for the shelves too so they are waterproof. You just have to edge them very carefully with chewable, replaceable softwood or with metal for any bits that would be more awkward to replace. So you can use fairly hefty battens to edge along the fronts of all the shelves, it will keep the substrate in, protect the melamine shelf and offer some enrichment, but dependant on how aggressively they chew, you might find it easier to edge around access holes with aluminium angle or you can get steel plastering 'beading' angle pretty cheaply.

im so angry o m g. Shortly after my last reply here I got an email from the guy that was supposed to build the cage and he said that he won't build it unless he will get 100% of the payment!!!! I already paid him 50%, like we settled earlier! So of course I said no and asked for a refund... Then he stopped replying on my emails... Who does that, really?? My mom contacted the website where this guy was selling his stuff. They said it will take 2+ weeks to get our money back. People are awful BUT I found another way to make a fairly cheap cage for my degus. Nothing will stop me haha! My mom agreed to build a cage with me lol. Yesterday, she bought IVAR shelving units from Ikea on sale, and I painted them with acrylic enamel and left to dry. She also got four glass doors HITTARP also on sale. SO NOW for the dimensions: Length: 126cm Depth: 50cm Height: 180cm And everything for the amazing price of 150USD Cage will be a little big longer than I wanted, but I think it re compensates the depth, as I originally wanted it to be 60cm, and the lenght 110cm
