I can't get my head around what it might be like. How can it be compressible foam if you can park a vehicle on it, wouldn't that just ruin it?
It is possible to buy thick, solid rubber matting, which I think is designed for garages or vehicles, might that be an option?

Yeah, I think you need to touch it and see what it feels like. It's really hard to tell if it is super soft or if it might be super durable. I'll admit that one of those photos makes it look like the foam rubber matting you can use for standing on, which is pretty easy to damage.

Have you thought about plastic sheeting? You could secure it using the base of the furniture and playpen, but it would be easy to replace should they damage it and easy to clean when they pee on it.
It would also fold down for storage.

What about those vinyl chair mats that you can put down under a desk? Some of those are pretty thick and are very sturdy?

Ok, so edges would not be exposed. The size is just about right for keeping the whole pen on it without edges.
Yes, I agree, I probably need to feel it for the compressible factor. Firm is good.
Plastic Sheeting: I'm trying, but having a hard time finding something both big enough, durable enough, and cost effective.
Desk mats: That's actually one of my inspiration pieces for this, but none of them are big enough to cover the area with a single one. I totally would be game for one of those if I could find it in 4ftx8ft (approx 1.3m x 2.6m for you Europeans). I think if I put two or three of them next to each other the girls would be all over those edges in a hot minute and I can't think of anything good to connect the edges with.
I've also looked at the vinyl roll out carpet protectors. Like the kind that people did as a runner on high traffic areas. Again, it is hard to find the size I need except in custom which increases the price.

Have you tried your local carpet shop for plastic sheeting? I know in the uk they wrap the rolls of carpet in it, then throw it our afterwards.

So everything I've found indicates we don't really have that stuff over here. We have large plastic sheets, but they have a pretty ridiculous price tag. Examples: "Surface Protection" for construction flooring is almost always stuff like this: www.homedepot.com/p/Trimaco-3-17-ft-x-100-ft-FloorShell-Heavy-Duty-Surface-Protector-12380/204250134 So it is usually roll out paper or thin plastic. It isn't thick or durable at all. If they need something more solid in construction, they usually just buy plywood which is as low as 18$ per large sheet. To get a large plastic sheet like what you linked, this is a typical option for me: www.homedepot.com/p/Makrolon-48-in-x-96-in-x-0-187-in-Polycarbonate-Sheet-171140/206792207 That's in the cheap range. So you can see why people use plywood at 18$ a sheet instead of this stuff which is more than $100 a sheet. Coroplast is the only cheaper plastic, but it is like cardboard, so it wouldn't hold up for walking on all the time. About carpet shops, I would have to check around, but I think they basically just saran wrap carpet rolls over here. It is so weird how different some of these things are between here and there. I theorize that because wood is pretty cheap here, there isn't the market or demand for plexiglass sheeting and it is much more expensive as a result.

Sorry if I sound frustrated, I just feel like perspex has been recommended multiple times (for good reason on your end) but the market here is so different. As far as I can tell, we just don't really have that stuff.

Coroplast is pretty tough, if anything it would just crush, but I don't think it would tear. And if your local home depot doesn't have it, you call a sign shop because they carry the big sheets. Even my area, I found two sign shops next door, who would sell me a 4'x8' sheet for $25 (wanted it when we had guinea pigs). They might also have a stronger version, wouldn't you think?
Do you have Christmas Tree Shops near you? We get big plastic tarps, blue or green usually, from them for just a few bucks, they will have them as large as 12'x20' for no more than $20, and smaller sizes are cheaper. Tacky looking, but would do the job. They probably have them now, or will be getting them in soon, since it's heading towards fall leaf cleanup time.
Or how about an indoor-outdoor carpet? could always turn the rubber-backing up and the carpet down.

Flooring places that sell lino or vinyl on the roll often have ends that they cannot use in a house simply because the size is too small to do something with. Perhaps you could ask if they have any ends that are the right size for you?

It's more like plastic sheeting, a thin version of what 'for sale' signs are made of. It's more durable than carboard although does get dented with excessive weight applied, but doesn't rip or tear like cardboard would. If they are prevented from having access to the edging it is perfect - such a shame it is unavailable in the US! Next time I do a cage clean I am happy to post some pics of how my shelving is holding up, I am so impressed with it and it has had 9 months of usage now.

Hello I have been investigating and looking for some sort of degu proof fold-able play pen for ages! This dog one was one i was looking at and wondering how to make it safe as the gaps between the bars were to large! How did you get on with the corrugated plastic sheets?

Bit late...... Corotherm is designed for roofing, but you can get a triple layered one which may tolerate standing. As the others have said, it's only a problem if they get to an edge, but you can use standard aluminium or steel I profile to join, which will stop them. I use it to stop Snoozygoo and Sneakygoo from chewing my kitchen cabinets.
Garage matting, whilst tough, tends to fit like a jigsaw, or taper at the edges, either making it hard to join, or utterly chewable! Unless you can find vinyl flooring on a roll........
