Yep I'm so pleased, I can get on with chores or shower/get ready in another room and not have to worry. It's great when you work full time too as I rarely have time to sit with them or supervise (bad degu mum!) for lots of time, so they still get their time out of the cage every day now. When I do have time though it is lovely

Some great suggestions! We went with this design so we have full flexibility over it's usage. For example, we can use only 4 panels to create a smaller square play pen, or simply use it as a guard to block of sections of the room etc. We had toyed with the idea of using metal rings on the corner joins, something similar to a keyring loop. The break for freedom attempts have all but disappeared thankfully. They seem to much more relaxed now they can't see through the wire mesh now. In hindsight, we could've drilled the bottom holes higher up to discourage chewing. Looking forward to getting some new toys for the play pen only to create a totally different experience for them when we get the out Is this the sizing of the MDF you used for the pen? MDF BOARD (TH)6MM (W)1220MM (L)2440MM I'm looking at making my boy a play pen and would like to go down the wooden route I'm terrible with sizings though, but I think this one matches up? It's this one here: www.diy.com/departments/mdf-board-th-6mm-w-1220mm-l-2440mm/1696211_BQ.prdI'm naff at DIY but I'll give it a go if it means he can have somewhere safe to play outside his cage!

Hiya, after trying a wooden playpen myself I would no longer recommend this as they chew their way out eventually. But yes, this looks like the same measurements. To prevent escapes, drill the holes as high up as possible so they cannot chew them, as this was what was the death of our pen. A cheaper, lighter and easier to store option would by buying this correx stuff : www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B016DY1MD0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_sCbVzbEK2CS7R trust me it is much more effective.

I used that stuff to rat proof my room once and one of my girls just hoisted it up and went under it straight away hahaha. Although, admittedly she was a clever clogs. I get that the correx is easier to store and transport, but wouldn't they chew through it super quick?

Misscatafer uses the black with black duct tape and the best we can figure is . . . they can't seem to see it so they don't seem to go after it. I think she may have some nibbles on it, but for the length of time she has had it, and the frequency of usage, it is remarkable untouched.

Amazingly no. I have been using this pen for nearly 9 months and I think in that time I have had one escape where stupidly I didn't straighten the floor covering out properly so she got under it and then got under the pen as it is light enough, but usually they are unable to lift it themselves to get out. Only nibbling I have had is on the duct tape and again only on one occasion where we set it up under direct light and they must have been able to see the joins. It is still in perfect condition with no damage I was the same as you, I saw this pen on Facebook and was like 'that is way too simple to work', but for £30 odd I realised it was much cheaper than everything else we had tried so I just bought it as a test and realised it was perfect!

I think it might depend on the degus. My degus always went for any kind of sticky tape like a moth to a flame, so any kind of tape wouldn't work for my degus, and as Misscatafer says, you would need to make sure there is nothing lifting up the correx anywhere, but correx will certainly be easier to move about. MDF would take longer to chew, and should be chew proof if you can get the boards close together at the joins so they can't get their teeth on the edge of each board. You may be able to achieve this if make secure board attachments out of reach of the degus. You could use something like self adhesive velcro straps. Worst case scenario with the mdf is that you would need to put some metal strips around the edges of the lower regions of each board.
