Yeah its hairless where he's been running on his wheel, it must of happened over a few days as my sister in the mornings fuss him as I'm out early working and they said they never seen or felt anything. As anybody had surgery on their degu around 8years old?

Just a quick update rang pets at home and they advised me to still see my vet tommorow then organise a day to see them to give me a better idea on what's wrong with him.

aww that is a huge old lump there. Poor little guy. Don't feel too bad - I had hairless rats who started getting repeated cysts when they got to their twilight years. Some of them were pretty big before I noticed. You'd think on a hairless animal I'd have spotted it.
I think PAH are right (for once!) - see your vet, see their vets, see if what they say matches up. Can't hurt to get a few opinions.
Is he on antibiotics now? If so, have you seen any change? With my rattie's cysts they would need lancing, draining & cleaning & the antibiotics would shrink the infection. Maybe that's what's happening here - if so, no sedation needed. If it needs more investigation, you'd need to weigh up how much pain the vet says he is in, how well they think he'll tolerate anaesthetic & whether it'll get worse. You can't really make any decisions until you know more. SOME vets are quick to offer euthanasia, especially with older small animals. Some times this is appropriate (especially if there is no treatment options & they are in pain & not eating) Some times it's because they know the treatment will be expensive & ongoing & you could just buy another pet. If they seem to be suggesting this, you need to ask their reasons clearly & weigh up what they say. All I can say is 8 is pretty old, but we have members who have degus in their teens & we know they can live a lot longer than we typically see with most captive degu (probably bad breeding, nutrition or care issues) Your little guy seems bright enough & doesn't look to be in massive amounts of pain, you say he's pretty healthy so it's possible he might be a candidate for anaesthesia. However they will always tell you that any anaesthesia carries risks, & any animal could develop complications.
I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry until you have more information. You can't really make any decisions yet. Let us know how it goes at the vets? Good luck. Give Charlie a big smootch from us all.

Thank you for the reply, it doesnt seem to be clearing up much, i just wish the scab would heal has it hasn't yet but as I'm at work God knows what he gets up to has he is always running and jumping around. The vet I'm with basically said if the antibiotics won't help then he might have to be put too sleep so I'll take him Tuesday and then try and get him at PAH Wednesday. It's a tough decision but last thing I want is him in pain. Thank you will do

I think since the lump is so big it should be perfectly feasible for a vet to stick a needle in it and see if anything comes out with a syringe, without using anaesthetic, so pretty low risk. That should tell you if it is a fluid filled cyst, a cheesey filled abcess or cyst, or if it's fairly solid and just a little blood it is probably a tumour. that will then put you in a much better position to make a decision.

I don't see why they couldn't I will ask the vet tommorow if he thinks it could be a possibility of a syst, I think the plan of action is see my vet tommorow, try and get an appointment at pah Wednesday then way up the options then.

Hi just an update seen the vet today and there hasn't been any progress with the antibiotics my vet said he was happy to do surgery. As he's still fit and full of it I think it's the best option, so I agreed and he's goes in Friday, I think the vet is confident based on what he's like in him self and I didn't want to delay things any further so fingers crossed!

Awwwwwwww, he looks like my expectant friend in your photo! *edit - Robyn popped out last night*. He sounds like he's still enjoying life to the full, so I'm glad the vet's prepared to operate. Good luck!

It looks a lot like River's abdominal abscess, after I'd had him neutered - I reckon an aspirate of the lump is probably a good idea here (if the nurses come running out of the room with streaming eyes muttering about how it smells like something died in there, there's a fair chance it's just a nasty infection).

That sounds like it was a mass that she had to cut out, rather than a fluid or gunk filled cyst? When it's a mass they would normally have to send it off to a lab to find out what it is, or I think sometimes they would recognise a fatty lump, but if it's a tumour you can't usually tell by looking if it's cancerous or benign.

Such good news ep391 , you must be so happy the operation is over. Think the vets always have to give the worst case scenerio when it comes to sedation but they really surprise us sometimes in the way the cope with it and bounce back so quickly. What a little gorgeous lad he is, sending the best of luck to you both x
