Thought I'd make a thread to formally introduce the new arrivals (rather than hijack skardsen's threads!)
They arrived Tuesday, in an Aventura cage. They are around 5 years old & seem fit & healthy. The one with the grey smudge on his nose (Sir Ian McKellen) is a little shy. He gives us evil looks when we go near the cage & keeps his distance. Sir Patrick Stewart is much more friendly, interacting with us already. When I met them with their owner, she insisted I cuddle him & he was amazingly snuggly, very calm. I'm not sure I want to be grabbing him so soon, but hoping we can keep that kind of interaction in the future.
They're on Science selective nuggets which seem pretty good, so I'll keep them on that. They have eaten some of the forage I've put in their cage, but left others. Not sure she fed them forage other than hay. She said she gave them a raisin daily, & they are certainly begging for something, but I'm going to cut that down to one a week for now. Sir Ian Mckellen is of course very grumpy about that.
The cage was quite dirty - I gave it a good clean & put plenty of hemp chips in (am waiting for some mats to come, chips are too messy) I find it a bit weird the wooden shelves/toys were a bit cruddy, there was poop stuck to the cage shelves. Not as clean as I'd thought it would be. Think they were fed well, loved, handled but the cleaning & vet care were a bit hit & miss (shocking for a teacher! lol) I binned the worst stuff but kept as much as I could. I have put in a big cardboard box so they have somewhere dark to hide, a new nest box i had & some new wooden bridge thingys. Have ordered a new hive from little pet warehouse, some forage & hemp mats from zooplus & a 16" tictac wheel (she said they had a wheel before, but had destroyed it)
They have settled down, but it's all a bit new for them. They get spooked easily, & I'm trying to give them as much peace & quiet as they need.
The goo babies have spotted them already, lots of looking & curious squeaking. The chins have had a look as they heard them. BB as usual is nonplussed, ignoring all other animals except Minnie the dog & all humans.
Think the chins will fit in nicely here. Don't have to buy anything new, just extra stuff as I go along (forage, food etc) & not much more in terms of cleaning. Am 100% full with rescues now, can't take in anything else, even a mouse!
Am so glad skardsen made me do this! Am enjoying having chinchillas around again.
When I get some decent 'photos/videos I'll upload them, but my phone is steam powered, so delays are inevitable.
