Was a little bit worried about this purchase as it wasn't cheap (£50) but Floss has been running on it all night. It's 16 inch, solid metal, and runs rather quietly considering its size. Still makes a lot of noise though since chinchillas are quite the sprinters, and the lower quality of the Aventura causes the whole cage to shake while she's on it. The little bundle of energy has been tiring herself out on it, and now she's all flopped out. Fluff's in a bit of a huff though. I took the saucer away and gave it back to the degus (you can hear the sound of them running on it in the background of the video), as it was only a loan while I waited for the wheel to arrive. I don't think she likes the wheel, but I'm hoping she warms up to it. She quite liked the saucer, but Floss didn't, so now I'm wondering if I need a wheel AND a saucer in there.

Looks like she is really enjoying it If you think it might be a problem, it would put less stress on the cage and be less jiggly if you could attach it to quite a large piece of wood and then attach that to the cage in several places.

So last night I turned out the light and climbed into bed. A few seconds later, I hear the gentle pattering of feet against metal, I hold up my phone light to see Fluff giving it a try. I woke up this morning to see her sprinting away on it. I guess she just didn't want anyone to watch her first attempt. moletteuk It was quite awkward to get it attached by myself with just one door to work with. I don't think I've got it in me to take it down again.

Is that the tic tac 16"? If so, BB has the same one, still looks brand new after months of wear. Best wheel I ever had.
I would guess she just wasn't feeling active enough, she's probably going to do most of her running at night as it's in her dna to be most active at night. She'll probably come to you during the day, even eat or play for a bit, but only so she can interact with you. Most of her energy spurts will be at night, the wall of death thing usually happens a few times a night. Might be worth getting a low level light & staying up late one night? Might see a whole other side of them

Maybe Fluff has seen some of those video clips of animals falling on their face and didn't want to be next lol Fair enough about the fixing of the wheel!

randomname It is yeah. I got one for the degus when I first brought them home, and I swear by them ever since. Theirs is still running great, although it does make clicking sounds now. I'm starting to work out they these two do things now. Pretty much during the day, they don't want me to interact with them at all. If I try, Fluff pretty much goes into an unresponsive, full alert state. So I just wait until around 8 at night for when they'll happily climb up and down my arms a few times. I also discovered their favourite treat; Supreme Science Selective Degu, of all things. They snatch it out my fingers when I offer them it. goolover The best thing about how fluffy chinchillas are is that when they're standing up, you sometimes can't see their arms at all. They kinda look like a fuzzy, mammalian version of a tyrannosaurus. moletteuk I think there was definitely a bit of that going on, but she fully embraced it after having a go when no one was looking.

Grrr I get so jealous reading about your guys loving their metal wheels and mine sits on his top floor collecting dust! (Literally)
Well, I'm hoping the new guy from the farm (who I will be collecting once the painting is finished Yay!) loves it because it's going in his cage instead.

Since you little guy is ok with physical contact from you, perhaps you could sit him down in the wheel and slowly rotate it so he makes the connection of being able to move forwards on it? The only thing a degu likes to do more than argue about food is to run and run and run, so it seems odd that he hasn't taken to it.

Yeah, keep trying with the wheel, sometimes they will just click with something suddenly, or you could try it in a different place.

He knows what it's for and has had a go - albeit an unenthusiastic go! This was his first and last use of it vimeo.com/185698931

Yeah, keep trying with the wheel, sometimes they will just click with something suddenly, or you could try it in a different place. Very true. My pair never used their wooden cottage for months after I got it; they just chewed it. Then, one night, they decided to sleep in it, and they've slept in it every night since, making into a full nest.
