Hello! This week has been a bit of a learning curve and I've been thankful for your forum. Last weekend we purchased Tom and Jerry from the dreaded 'Pets at Home' along with a cage, bedding etc. not fit for purpose so this week has seen me reading and ordering a new cage (will need enhancements, but will be bigger than they are used to) and food and making my own seed and herb mix 😃. They are lovely little guys, about 8 months old and very active and intuitive. They love talking with one another, having little fights but then cuddling and making up (reminds me of the actual Tom and Jerry) running together in their wheel and snuggling up in their hammock. We have spent the week getting to know one another. Jerry is braver than Tom and quickly comes and gets a treat. Tom is a bit more reserved but once he sees what's on offer he's quick to follow suit.

Great to meet you and Tom & Jerry, welcome to the forum If you quote the RSPCA you may be able to return the cage as too small and not fit for purpose and get your money back.

Hello Cloudbabe! Welcome to the forum! It is a steep learning curve, but it so worth the effort to learn. It is lovely to meet you and to hear of your boys, Tom and Jerry.

It's definitely worth going a bit mad at p@h and they will give you your money back. We were in the same boat, sexed our degus wrong and had the tiny cage they recommend. I came on here found out how hideous the cages are and went a bit mental at p@h who still argued that the cages were suitable for 4 degus and that I was wrong. So I carried on being a handful and got my money back - didn't have to return the stuff either. I said I wanted it back so I could buy an appropriate cage. Which is what I did then sold the thicketts for £20 to someone with a hamster lol.

Indeed.. I'm hoping the hamster was very happy lol, gave them a nesting box, food bowl and big huge bag of paper bedding for the little dude too.. I hope he appreciated it all! Had lots of mods too all wooden ledges everywhere lol.
But seriously they will give you your money back if you try hard enough. I argued until the cows came home. I got £110 back as it was a deal with the wheel and bedding box etc.

Yay! Love to hear someone get P@H to admit responsibility - well done. You've properly made my day. Just so you know, hamsters travel 25 miles during their nocturnal wanderings, they need much more space than you think. I don't even think it's big enough for mice personally. It's better than a lot of hamster cages out there, but I still wouldn't use one as the only home for any animal (maybe as part of a set up or in a play pen) I had a chinchilla given to me that had spent at least 4 years of his life in a thicketts. Makes me so angry. If you ever hear of an old lady going crazy in a pet shop & smashing cages - that may be me...

Well I put it up for sale and I had a lot of people asking to buy it and I MADE them tell me what it was for and refused them all except for the lone hamster. I didn't want to throw it as it was virtually brand new. I don't know much about hamsters but it was the smallest critter anyone was trying to buy it for and it was definitely just one hamster, I thought it would be a much better home than the tiny tiny tiny plastic thing it was in (the dad showed me photos of the whole setup etc with the daughter in and so forth so I knew he wasn't lying).
I still go to pets at home and buy things because I can't drive and it's the closest pet shop, and I know they're usually willing to refund things if they break because they're now scared of me lol. I always pull them up on their animals if any of them look mistreated/sick/bullied/super cramped etc. What makes me sad is that the degus FLY out of there and I know most people will have bought 2-4 of them and put them in a thicketts.
WE NEED TO BOYCOTT P@H SELLING ANIMALS WITH TINY CAGES!!!!! HOW DO WE DO IT? It makes me so mad. 😢😢😢
