It's been almost 90 days since it looked like Phil was Philomena, but we have weighed him for the last three weeks, and he has not gained any weight. Actually lost 10 g between weeks 1 and 2, and now holding steady. So, he's not a girl, at least not a pregnant girl, or else since he's an inbred degu (at least one generation, if not more, whole box of degus was dumped in a rescue's doorway) who would then have been inbreeding with his inbred brothers, there's too much inbreeding-ness for viable pups.
And while I didn't have a camera ready, while he was in the weighing jar, he looked more male than he ever has before.
So, while the thought of little degu pups was kinda cool, with a great relief towards not having to deal with pups, I declare him male and us safe.

(now that I've actually declared it, I expect to find him popping out about a dozen pups next week.....)

yes, it is. And I really think I need to face downsizing, if even just through attrition. Looking to rehome the two pairs of parrotlets, as we just don't have time or energy to give them what they properly deserve. Then, I have six parakeets/budgies in the big flight (down from a peak of 17 when we took in a few that were facing homelessness, which was really too many), and two in a separate cage because I have twice as many males as females and the female now named Spawn of Satan went homicidal on one of the other females who got too close to her man. If I added a few more females, it would even things out and they could become one flock again. But as hubby mentioned, if we let them fade out, then that big cage could hold what is now in several smaller finch cages, which would simplify life and cage mass in the house. Sad thought, but reasonable.

Very understandable. My mum's reaction the other day shows she already thinks I have too many, and that's just with four gerbils and the six weirdos!

I'm very glad, for your sake, the Phil remains simply Phil. WHEW!! If you were closer . . . well . . . MUCH closer . . . I would gladly take a pair of parrotlets from you. The distance is rather intimidating though. LOL! Oh . . . and the border could be a problem.

I think it would still be good to know for sure, especially with breeding season hormones increasing. He did look a lot like a girl in some of those photos...
