It's better to keep them separately.

mjtinning, welcome to the forum (please check out rules and add a location to your profile)
Regarding keeping degus and chins together, it has been reported from others that it is possible, indeed in the wild they do on occasion share the same burrow, as the degu is day active the chin uses the burrow in the day, and the degu at night.
In captivity you would need to consider feeding requirements, chins can eat a small amount of sugar, but degus cannot etc. you would also need to consider space, a sleepy chin is not going to want to be disturbed in the day by an active degu!
I keep both degus and chins but they are seperate, Dougal cant stand our chins, but when Houdini (who is the youngest) looses Dillan and Dougal I may attempt to reintroduce him to the chins. (not sure yet!)

I'm afraid Basil and Mary really can't stand my chinchilla, Betsy, either! Mary fairly screams at Betsy when she's out and dares to come near to their cage! I have heard of some living together happily, but Betsy is soo much bigger than the chins, that I would be wary of her bouncing on them by accident! Another point someone mentioned is that they don't speak the same language...... chins don't squeak like degus do, and so they miss vital signals that only another member of the same species would understand.

Of my degus, Dougal will go absolutely nuts if he sees one of the Chins, but the other two seem more interested than scared. They have met when Mungo was much younger, and all got on fine, but it was Dougal that I was worried about. I didnt want to inflict a chin on him if he wasnt happy, so thats the reason we got Ripley instead!!
