Hi, I have lil' guest in my degu area. He is 2,5 month old degu male. I let him play with Alabama&Virginia because I though he is not old enough to get them pregnant and I didn't want to give him depression since his owner is on vacation. Lately I saw him ummm cleaning his penis and I thought degus can do that only when they have ercetion. And now I am worried he can get them pregnat( even if I didn't see it and I watched them). Any advice?

At 2.5 months, he certainly can get them pregnant! Have you been fully supervising their play time, or do we have the potential patter of tiny paws in three months?

He is definitely able to get them pregnant so you will have to keep him separated from your girls unless you can supervise and stop him from mating if he tries to. Its quite a quick process to so you could have looked away or left the room for literally 10 seconds and it would have already been done. Have seen my boy mating and he is like speedy Gonzales lol

I guess the only thing you can do is keep an eye on the girls' weights

I am sure Virginia isn't pregnant since her "heat" is next week. I didn't see any intercourse between them, only little kickboxing (really impressive) and grooming. And thanks a lot my vet about info: males can impregnate females after 6 months :/ I have to admitt having male is really cool experience. He agree to take him on hands, feel comfortable going around house on my shoulder and it's very well adjusted to humans. If neutering degu weren's such risk I would keep him defintely since he is looking for new home. He behave a lot like rat (biggest compliment my bf can say about animals).

For female definitely but I have to admitt I read articles about males to be fertile about 6 months, but study group weren't that big(like 30 females and 30 males). Well I hope I was good guard!

I think DC had a 6 week old that managed to inpregnante his mum and sisters so I'd keep a very careful eye on the girls and weigh them regularly.
How common are degus where you live? I'm wondering if it's worth thinking about nueturing him so you can give him a home?

Yeah . . . he was with them from 8-10 weeks of age while we got his cage built and ready for him . . . and then we had 8 pregnant girls as a result. FRUSTRATION. So, he is definitely old enough to do the deed. You know, you could keep him and just plan to have him neutered when he is closer to a year of age. He will not be impressed with being alone, but at least being next to the girls he will be able to talk and interact with them to some degree. It is not the "best" for now, but if you followed through with the neutering, he would no longer be alone once he was healed.

Well when his owner ask for letting degu on his vacation I am pretty sure he wish me to keep him. That degu is last from 11 pups litter(all boys) and he isn't get along with his father. And let's be honest when you have 3 floor house, giant garden with creek, orchard, extra building for storing stuff, 3 cats, 2 dogs, parrot, 2 degus and 90% of family work in home (rest of them work literally next door lol) you give yourself a sign: Left you animal here it will has best care. I will ask vet if she doing neutering of degus. He is so funny little guy I even wrote a diary about his time here

Blimey, can I come and live with you? I'd only add 1 human, 1 cat and 3 goo's to the family

Your pets are so loved I would love to let my boy's out to play. Our house is so busy . The boy's have a large cage. They can see what's going on in the house .they like tormenting the dog and getting fused from every one who comes through the door. Liz
