Hi Everyone,
Relativly new Degu keeper here. Adopted a pair of brothers from a guy who was moving house and couldn't take them with him. Been wanting Degu's for a while, did a lot of research and finally decided to take the plunge.
Had Elijah and Theodore (existing names from the previous owners) for about 3 weeks now and love them, they're such charaters and are a very cheeky pair, I do fear they are learning that chewing the cage means they get attention. The more boystrous of the 2 (Elijah) has started getting very restless despite a lot of exercise and almost daily dust baths and attention and has decided he his home would look better with a big hole in the plastic base. This has been patched up as a temporary fix but I want to build them a large, self-built home, which is what brought me to this forum.
Hopefully over the next week or so I will get this built using ideas and suggestions from you guys to guide me, Will post updates as the project progresses and would love feedback and suggestions.
I know I want a deep (preferable metal or glass to chew proof) base for burrowing and as much height as I can afford to give them (they have an entire corner of a room with the base limits being about 20" by 30" and up to about 6ft tall) with many levels and tunnels to explore. Wanting to make the whole frame and sides out of metal and use wood for the shelves and steps.
Thoughts?
Matt
