Hey everyone!
My names David. I've long been reading these forums for advice and tips on caring for my degus, so thought I'd finally take the plunge and join the community!
Introduction
I've long been a lover of all types of animals. They're super innocent, fun and make me laugh with their antics. It's when I graduated from University and got my own little place that I decided to get some pets of my own to make the place more lively. Two degus!
Calm (inappropriately named), attained his name as he was anything but calm! He loves wizzing around the cage being hyper all hours of the day. Never shy, always wanting to explore. This guys the alpha male of the group.
Speedy (also inappropriately named), had a totally opposite temperament. He was very scared when I first got him, more often than not hiding out of sight. Months passed and this guy became my best buddy. As I sat on my computer desk next to their cage, playing games or programming, speedy would always be sleeping on my shoulder. Every day I got home from work, he'd be sitting by the cage door waiting for me to let him out to sit on me.
Cage
After reading threads on this forum, I quickly realised that the cage I had my degus housed in was far from big enough. This is when I decided to make a cage with three levels, around 23000 square cm. Calm and speedy both love it.
Farewell friend
A couple of years down the line speedy fell ill. I took him to an exotic vet but nothing could be done to save him. It was painful to see something I loved so much in pain. What crushed me the most is that he had a short life. Farewell buddy, I'll forever miss you.
A new era
It's time for Calm to get some new mates. After a couple of weeks of being on his own (and not looking like he is phased in a big cage all to himself) I decided to purchase two baby degus! I've only had these for a couple of days so far. They are currently housed in a smaller cage at the side of the one I crafted where they can see each other. Tomorrow I'll be sectioning my cage off so they can see and smell each other better. I have a feeling calm will be overly territorial, but with a proper introduction there's no reason these three can't share their home together.

I chose the white and grey degu as he's rather unique in colour, and the brown furred one as calm is grey in colour. So 3 different colours!
My new degus currently don't have names. I'd appreciate some ideas or suggestions for cool names to give them!
Thanks for letting me share my story, and thanks thanks for reading it! I'll look forward to any responses!
P.s. If anybody would like to see photos of speedy and calm, or my cage, I'll retrieve them from my old phone
