Hello I thought introduce myself on here. I got my little goos about 2 weeks ago and yes unfortunately I didn't know about the thickets cage Nono until I went on here. I ordered the aventura cage this morning which will hopefully be here very soon. My little ones, ash and stripe, seem pretty happy for the time being but I can't wait to get them into their new mansion! If anyone has any advice for that would be very much appreciated as I am a new goo owner, thanks!!

Hi Loren, thanks for replying! I'm still training at the moment only ash will come up to the cage door at the moment and will only jump on to my hand and then jump straight back off again, he knows he'll get a treat for doing this! But stripe is a lot harder to train as he is very shy and timid, ash being the dominant goo. How big is the cage you have at the moment, it might be best if you get another wheel as I am having the same problem due to the size of my current cage but once the new cage comes I am going to have double of everything to avoid fighting!

Well mine will only come into my hand if there's food.Mine also did that to begin with they would grab the piece of food from my hand and then run away with it.I really thought it was going to take me months to get them even to come out from hiding haha but luckily I had a few days off from work and I'm sure that's helped because I have spent so much time with them. I bought them a big empty flight cage and have filled it with wood levels and shelves but I wish I just bought the Aventura cage with the money I've spent on filling the cage how I want it haha.I am thinking of getting another wheel but not sure if it will leave them enough floor space.I did find a site that does big metal bucket wheels that are wide enough for 2 degus to run at the same time. Think they're called www.tictacwheels.co.uk. I've also had to order 4 pieces of Perspex to go around the base of the cage as I lose count the amount of times I have to sweep up their little poos.they seriously get everywhere! Where did you get your goos from?

Yeah that's exactly what I started off doing and then I didn't put food in my hand and gave it to them after they have jumped into my hand, ash is slowly learning, but stripe won't get close enough for me to even put a treat near him 😔 Oh wow I bet they love their big cage though!! I'm really not impressed by p@h idea of a degu cage as I didn't find out about this until after I got them If you have a wide enough shelf higher up surely you could get a wheel that can attach to the side of the cage rather than using up more floor space?

I think I will get another wheel.I know I can't believe the rubbish pah come out with, when I got mine they said 4 degus can live in their thickets cage?!What planet do they come from eh?I ordered the Perspex sheets from www.plasticsheets.com You can get it cut to any size and they will drill holes in it if needs be.it was quite cheap as I bought the thinnest thickness they do 2mm I think I got.The only downside was the p&p was more expensive than the actual plastic and delivery is 3-7 working days and mine haven't been dispatched yet and I ordered them 4 days ago.

4 degus in the thickets?!?! That's ridiculous!!! How can they think that's okay? 😩 Okay yeah I'm gonna have to get some of the for the new cage otherwise my floor is going to be absolutely covered In degu mess as ash seems to think it's great fun pushing anything he can through the bars of the cage!

Hello to Loren and to Jojojojovi both, and welcome to the forum! You've go quite the conversation going, LOL! I'm thrilled you have the Aventura cage coming, Jo! Word of advice, when it comes, don't even bother with the directions that "might" be included, just look it up on Youtube and you will get much better help for putting it together there.
Loren, a flight cage . . . does that mean it is tall and thin? Have you put in complete levels so as to give them more surface space? Perhaps you could post a photo? We don't have much storage space on our forum, so if you can use a photo hosting site, like photobucket for instance, it makes it much easier for you.

Thanks for the advice deguconvert!! I have noticed a lot of people have had problems with assembling the aventura cage it even says on the website I bought it from to just watch the YouTube video. If you have anymore advice for me that would be great, I want to make sure ash and stripe have the best life possible!!

My cage is similar size and shape to the Aventura.it has vertical bars though I'll try and get a pic at some point.I have had pine shelves made to fit the cage and I've put them in so they slot together to make a full levels.I have 2 full levels and then a half level at the top and about 8 ledges. The only downside is it has mesh bottom with a plastic tray underneath but my partner is going to make a metal tray as he's a welder and for now I've put cardboard and a slate tile down on the base of the cage. But they love kicking everything out the sides. Its amazing how far their little doos doos can travel haha.

Don't worry, I have a very scaredy one called little one who was extremely nervous and couldn't cope with being round degus never mind humans but I found a way and now she's fine with the other two degus and me and even goes to sleep on me although def not a fan of other scary humans lol! And even if it never happens with that one, they're still fascinating to watch sometimes. She does like lots of places to hide so she can run somewhere quick if someone comes in etc so that might help them feel more secure and just let them come to you :-)

Hi welcome to the forum. I think it's amazing that within a few weeks, you've started looking for welfare advice & are going to improve their cage. We all start from bad advice (my rabbits had tiny hutches/runs when I started 10 years ago, feel terrible I didn't give them enough space - they're much happier now) It's a learning curve with degus - I've had them more then 10 years & still learn new stuff from this forum every day. I'd recommend transferring the bedding & substrate into their new cage along with them, it'll help them settle quicker. Obviously their cage toys & stuff will already be scent marked so that'll help too. Put a sand bath in their new cage to help them all smell the same. It's handy to have an empty pringles tube to transfer them if they're not into being picked up. Moving cage can be stressful for them, so expect a bit of bickering & hiding at first. Maybe hide some seeds, oats etc all around the cage to encourage them to explore? If there's room, 2 wheels & a couple of nesting boxes means they shouldn't fight. Remember that food & water can be fought over, so provide them with a bowl & bottle each (I also like to provide one extra to make sure) & position them away from each other so they can eat in peace. After a couple of days, they should be loving all the extra room. Can't wait to see pictures of them in their new palace.

Most of the time I will leave the cage door open and sit next to and stripe will come to door every now and then and might sniff my hand so he's slowly getting there, but yes I will create some good hiding spots!

Thanks randomname this is very helpful! i was worried about how to transfer them I didn't want to stress them out too much! Also what sort of seeds and oats should I get, at the moment I just have rice puffs for training purposes. yeah I've already thought I'm going to need double of everything, i already sorted the food squabbling situation and the fighting has almost completely stopped, I'm pretty sure it's just over the wheel at the moment, as it's such a small cage until the aventura turns up. thankyou again and pics will definitely be up soon!

Just normal porridge oats are ok, bigger flakes the better. The nutrition thread is a great place to browse for advice deguworld.proboards.com/board/24/diet-nutritionSome of the seeds I've tried are hemp, flax, sesame, caraway, niger, sunflower, pumpkin, millet, mustard, celery, dandelion & poppy. You can find stuff in most supermarkets or in the bird section in pet shops. My goos were new to seeds, but have loved them all & their coats look amazing. This forum has taught me loads about seeds, learnt some really interesting stuff.

Two of mine will let me simply carry them over as long as I point/gesture to where I'm taking them too and it's somewhere they want to go but the nervy one wont and none of them will get into evil vets box. Even thought the nervy one will sleep on me, she only trusts things if I/objects don't move lol but the other two trust me enough now that even if I have to grab them, they still come back for more lol. I suppose it's a bit trickier at first as you don't want to do anything that will set them back but I have one of those cheap purple plastic bendy tubes ( and they just can't resist a tunnel, they know but they just can't stop getting into it lol! Although you can't put one of these tubes in permently as they're plastic, is there any way you could put the two cages close together and stretch the tube to go from one entrance to another. They are generally curious enough to go through themselves and if they see the big fun cage first, they might be happy to go
