Has anyone tried diatomaceous earth in their degu's bath sand? I'm thinking of trying it to test if a scaly, dry tail on Darwin and Aslan are mites. Its been gaining popularity in dogs and cats around here for treating internal parasites, fleas and mites. I have found a couple of websites that say it is safe for rodents, birds and reptiles as well and livestock add it to the food a lot for chickens, cows, horses etc.
The plan was to add maybe 5-10% to their dust bath and leave in until everyone has had a good roll, remove and then watch for a few weeks. If it helps then I'll give a longer go - maybe a day a week with the treated bath until the tails look better.
Comparing the tails of my two pairs they look completely different even though their diets and setups are the exact same. Einstein and Herc's are black, smooth and almost shiny/scaly where the other two are rough, dry and a touch flaky. I tried upping their oil seeds to no change and since Darwin was housed with a hamster in wood shavings and who knows about his care before hand .... I don't remember if Aslan's tail looked like before I got Darwin - do you remember anything deguconvert?

He had a most glorious tail . . . one of my favorite features of his. It seems to me that I have read in one of the threads over the last month or two about another member that uses this in their sand every other week or something. I don't think it would hurt them to have a try.

I can't find much info on it for degus, I don't suppose a short trial would do any harm. Are tail mites a thing though? It seems like a weird place to have mites because I imagine the blood flow isn't great? Maybe some other skin condition could be the culprit, like a fungal or bacterial issue?

I don't understand it because their coats are wonderful!! Aslan and Darwin actually have ten times nicer coats than my other two because they will actually eat the pellets and not just degu nature food ... I wish I could take them in and double check with the vet but I'm not working full time and already using my credit line monthly because of these migraines. I shall try and see

Sorry your migraines haven't eased Do you have access to a magnifying loupe, or microscope, or even just a strong magnifying glass that would help you get a look at a tail or some of the dry scales?
