If you need to clean out the nest I would just do a partial clean and put back everything that still looks OK. You should be able to handle the baby now, and you can usually tell early on if it's a boy or girl.

Thanks for that bouncy, unfortunately I think it means we will have to have two separate groups, unless we got dad and pup neutered? I don't know what's best to happen here :/

The photo is so blurry that I would not say anything. Any chance to take a good, sharp picture?

Definitely male. I would not neuter both of the boys . . . are you OK with having two groups?

It's looking like it'll have to be two groups and finding another female for Hamish. We don't really have space for another cage, so it could be that the xtrail is split into 2 (as it is just now) will this be ok long term or is it not enough space for them?

I have looked at the dimensions of your cage, and divided in half, with not just a shelf but the addition of a complete level in place of the shelf in each half, you are still a little short of the smallest acceptable space for two degus. If would be OK for a bit, I am sure, but I think it would be better if you could increase the space in each half a bit more. One of our members added another level to the bottom half by creating a level beneath the cage, enclosing it, creating an opening in the base of the cage for access, and the degus love it! deguworld.proboards.com/thread/20133/new-cage-base-pictures You could do that. Perhaps there is an attic type thing that could be added to the top half of the cage for an extension there as well.

Because they are notorious nibblers we don't feel too confident on adapting their house so we'll probably just get another xtrail lol and make do with the lack of space lol the little guys come first! I'll let you all know how we get on

I totally understand the feeling about adapting. If you are good with giving up some space, then may it be all joy and peace!

I understand your concerns about adapting. I spent weeks planning my basement extension, but still had a couple of initial escapees.

I'm really sorry but iv thought of another question.... Can you have 2 neutered males living with 2 females? We're still looking at all options of keeping mum dad and pup together, but I think this is the last option we have

You will struggle to keep two males together with one female, let alone two. Remember, they are territorial creatures so they would fight over any available female, even if it's their own Mum/Sister The best option would be to have two separate pairs, males and females

I'm sorry that I keep coming up with more questions but I don't want to do anything wrong that might be bad for the pup, I'm just wondering when it should be okay to put the running wheel back into where the pup is? Pup is now 19 days old and looks to be doing good, running about exploring, climbing the bars and even eating treats and solid food! Can anyone give me some advice?

I think you should be good to put it back in by this time. Although . . . let me ask, what kind of wheel is it?

It's a solid plastic wheel from pets at home, hope this is ok? I can't believe how fast the pup has grew and how confident the wee thing is becoming! They really are amazing wee things!
