Hiya, new here! I've been thinking of ways to improve my chins' cage. At the moment I have wooden shelving and I must admit, one of my boys loves to pee on it, no matter what I do. The discolouration and just thought of my poor boys standing in their own wee does not make me happy so it's time to come up with an alternative.
I was browsing and noticed people have tiled their shelving? This seems like a good idea to me but I wouldn't know where to start? You can get tiles for cheap off of eBay and I could potentially tile a few shelves with whatever... But I don't know what! Lino? Ceramic? Marble? And also tips on how to do this would be super duper appreciated, I'm not a DIY queen haha.
I just wanna clean things up and make sure my boys are happy little campers.
Thanks!

Ceramic tiles will make the shelves very heavy, although they will provide a cool surface to lie on in warm weather. They would require cement, unless you're just going to lay them on top, but they could move and cause injury.
The easiest way to protect the wood and make it easy to wipe up wee is to get some self adhesive vinyl floor tiles. You can find these in most diy stores, both in boxes and single. Just make sure the surface is clean before applying. If your chins are chewers, you might want to consider protecting the edges with metal, which will help the shelves last longer and stop your fluffballs from eating the lino.
Alternatively, I made anotherlevel in my cage, but made it from perspex. I put patterned sticky backed plastic on one side, so they didn't get a complex thinking they could walk on air, and some metal edging to stop it being chewed.

Vinyl tiles are easiest, and are cheap (you can sometimes get them in a pound shop) but you need to get the joins nice and tight and protect any exposed edges from chewing. You could use thin ceramic tiles with adhesive for wooden floors. Some people have used Fablon but I'm not sure what the lifespan of that would be.
As Bouncy says, you can replace shelves with perspex or melamine faced boards (with safe edging) which are both wipeable.
If your chins tend to wee in certain areas you can use metal, glass or ceramic pottys, things like ceramic tiles or square saucers or baking sheets can work well, add some really absorbant substrate like fitch and you eliminate puddles and it's easy to spot clean.
