hi new to the forum, me and my partner have 6 female Degu's and 2 male Chin's all who live in the a cage i built. i know theres going to be comments under this (if any) about them not getting on living together but their all about 1 year old and have been together for about 3 months now, the odd squabble at the start but nothing serious. And they all sleep in a massive pile and the chins spend a lot of time running around the lounge. I'm going to upload some of the pics of the new cage when i get 5 lol.

Welcome to the forum We try to be open minded here, I think you can get round the diet differences by feeding them all a degu diet, but I'd be interested to hear about sleeping patterns with chins being nocturnal, and degus diurnal. Have you ended up with a more crepuscular pattern?

Welcome to the forum! I want pics too!
Moletteuk . . . crepuscular . . . neat word!! I love your vocabulary. I'll have to look that one up, although the context gives a pretty strong suggestion of meaning.

Someone else posted a pic of their chinchilla and degus all asleep in a pile but I can't remember what thread it was.

the sleeping patterns aren't too much of a problem it was the chins trying to squeeze into the degus wooden house lol. chins are naturally crepuscular and the degus have settled into it aswel. dietary wise we settled for the pets at home pellets and hand feed the chins specific fruit and veg groups as treats when we watch tv. we do have snoopy and gizmo (the chins) out of the hutch for at least 3 hours a day to run round the lounge and once their worn out they retreat to the sofa with me and my partner to watch tv and fall asleep.

lol DC, crepuscular means active at dawn and dusk, my goos are most active in the evenings, I think it's more common in small furry pets than is generally thought. radar degus (and chins) need to eat a lot of forage for full health and wellbeing, check out our feeding guide for more info deguworld.proboards.com/thread/16425/degu-feeding-guide

How did you go about introducing them to each other? Do you get any issues with cross-species misunderstandings?

it took a couple of weeks to introduce them we started with the middle of the goo pack Scruff ( not the shyest but not the alfa either) then on by one added the goos and finally adding Blue (the alfa). after that it was just a case of when i got home from work i put the chins in with the goos until they ate, slept and played together, the chins started to wine in the end when we separated them from the goos so we decided to leave them in over night and that was pretty much it. when you say misunderstanding do you mean fighting or mating? the chins are too laid back to to argue and the goos don't pick fights due to the size difference, its like my 8 year old daughter picking a fight with Dwayne Johnson lol. and on the other end of the scale reproduction is apparently a scientific impossibility (iv been a assured both online research and backed with the local small animal vet).
however you really need to be careful when introducing them. Honestly, we have an amazing collection of critters and we got lucky.
i still worry to this day, me and adele are in Liverpool atm on holiday so they're on their own until tomorrow when the sitter gets there and he's only gunna be there for about an hour a day just to check them (and feed them) i almost set up a wifi baby monitor.
If there is anything else that anyone needs to know please don't hesitate to ask we are new to the forum NOT new to raising goos.
