I think I would break down into manly tears of confusion and joy if I came home to find a litter of degu babies. Part of me wants Finn to have some kids, because he's a strong, clever, and confident degu, but I doubt I could afford, or handle everything that's involved. Heh. Didn't quite come to tears but there was a lot of confusion as I thought I had 6 male degus :-) They are incredibly cute!

They're unbearably cute. I've had to avoid this thread because every time I see your babies I want some of my own. Have you been managing ok with them?

Pups should not be rehomed until six weeks age, at the earliest.

Wow! Congratulations again!
Is this likely to be your last litter, or are you expecting a third?

Wow! Congratulations again! Is this likely to be your last litter, or are you expecting a third? Expecting Mum number one to be mum number three as well. So feeding her up on peanuts and sunflower seeds and the like to help her keep the weight on. We can diet them once they've finished delivering!

We can diet them once they've finished delivering! An oil seed mix with some high calcium seeds (fennel, nigella, celery, coriander, poppy, sesame) in would be very useful as she will need extra minerals like calcium as well as extra fat. See Ratrations.com or mix your own using nutrition charts deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15602/vegetable-seed-nut-nutrition-charts Alfalfa, dandelions and forage generally are also good for mineral content.

I had a dream last night that was very likely inspired by this thread. I woke up (in my dream) to discover that Finn had inexplicably had a litter of 6, but they were all various sizes and only 2 of them looked newborn. 2 of them were jet black, 1 was patched and the rest were agouti. I was frantically trying to figure out what to do because the power had gone out, and there were robots in the streets bellowing that ownership of animals is forbidden.
I don't know either.

ROFL! Not a very peaceful dream! Yeah it was quite a trip. The medication I'm on causes me to have extremely vivid, unusually detailed dreams. Needless to say, as soon as I woke up I checked to make sure I still had a pair of brothers and nothing more.

I have had extremely vivid and detailed dreams all my life, so I know how they can stand stark in your mind and make you question what is real for a minute or two once you wake up. I used to have dreams of being over run by degus, back when we had unintentionally bought females to pair with our males, having been assured they were "male certified" by the store vet. HAA HAAA HAAA! Word of advice, when a store clerk tells you an animal has been cared for, or whatever, by the store vet, boldly ask if that vet is actually a trained veterinarian, or just a staff member tasked with caring for the medical and health needs of the animals. Of course pups resulted, and we dealt with the disaster/blessing that followed. But the DREAMS, months after it was all under control!! YIKES!! I would have to run upstairs and count them again, making sure that no one had escaped out of their cage and into the male or female cages. After I had the dreams a few times I knew it was just my brain and didn't have to check everything out anymore, but they wrecked a few nights, I can tell you!

I once had a dream that I was sat by a canal in a city centre with my friends when an eel swan past, followed by a dolphin and then a killer whale. The whale jumped out of the water, over the building behind me and flattened a pub - I rang the RSPCA and got shouted at for making up ridiculous stories!! I honestly have no idea what caused the dream - it's still one of my all time favourites.
