I'm going to take out one of the wooden bridges they've chewed as it looks like they've chewed one of the pieces to a sharpish point. Are they playing Dracula and Van Helsing?

My boys fought badly for a few years. What I learned ..... Never ever ever deep clean. If I have to wash one of their houses or something because it's starting to smell that is ALL I do for at least a few days. I spot clean only and once a month (only when there has been minimal fighting I will clean one level completely of carefresh and put fresh down. I am not allowed to change the cage around very much, one movement here and there or switch out is okay ..... Sucks for me, that is one of my favourite parts of my having rodents lol. I also have to have two of everything ..... Their own dishes, water bottles, wheels etc. I learned about the wheels again when I tried to exchange the nice silent spinner (they have two and one is barely used) to my new boy that is always running and has the crappy metal mesh one. ..... Fighting started again and was getting worse and worse. As soon as I put the wheel back in his cage, everything is peachy again. Herc is just a brat and won't share his wheel for the once or twice a week Einstein wants to run lol. I have gone from blood drawn/injuries almost once a week to nothing in months. Degus will slowly train you for how they want to live and as long as you listen everything is good ..... Don't and they will raise hell lol. But they are so awesome and totally worth it And of course aslan and Darwin are the sweetest boys and just love everything, no fighting except over food and are prefect .... Including chewing their plastic trays bad boys!! I'm working on it!! Just give me some time . I have my easy pair and my not so easy pair ..

That makes sense Karma, I'll try cleaning just one level each week and spot cleaning the others.
They are used to being cleaned out, but the cage will have to be taken down and rebuilt when I move as it won't fit through the door assembled. Hopefully they won't have to be in the thickets cage for too long, less than a day.

He seems fine on the leg, just turning every so then to look at it. There's no limping and I can't see any blood in the cage. He's eating and drinking normally and has been in the sand bath. They were fighting this morning (Dixie trying to mount Pixie and Pixie not having any of it) and I'm not sure if its the result of a bout so I've separated them by means of a perspex sheet across the gap in the centre tray (they are in an Aventura cage) so they can see each other but can't get to each other. This is the only way I can separate them until I can get to the shop tomorrow and pick up something better. Or move the cage so they can go side by side but separately. I spoke to the vet who advised separation and said that I shouldn't keep two males together as they would fight to the death even if its not breeding season! Even when I said they had been together three and a half years, he refused to let me book an appointment to get him checked over. you can keep two males together, many have on here its when you have mutiple males with a female that it can cause issues. all degus will fight, males and females, your vet dosent sound very helpfull. im pretty sure refusing to treat an animal is againt the law? they have a duty of care to treat any sick or injured animals, espically if the treatment is paid for .changes vets.

I'm going to, or at least insist that I see the other vet in the practise - he has just finished training but seems to know more than the idiot I spoke to the other day.
This morning I came across the leaflet from pets at home and I'm thinking of giving him a copy with the paragraph on keeping same sex pairs highlighted!
