Hi
A few days ago I found out a local place had had a baby boom and needed homes for free degu
I had looked at them before and done research so I jumped at the chance ... Got a fantastic cage .. all the starting essentials and went to collect ... Was taking 2 ( 6 month olds all girls ) when I got there found there was 4 girls and they were gonna end up snake feed ... One had a de shiethed tail ....so I am the new proud mum to Spring Summer Autumn and Winter
They were in a fish tank on shredded news paper with gerbil food and broccoli
Once in their new home and they saw the hay they were thrilled and have been chirping and exploring.
But I have a question .... Should I give them broccoli tomorrow ... I have switched the dry feed and given hay .. but will they miss the familiar foods ..

Yes they can eat broccoli but make sure it is fed in small quantities and not very often as it contains high sugar levels. This is the same with other fruit and veg.

Also im sure they wont be to phased by not having broccali. They will be more intrested in their exiting new enviroment to explore!

Veg is fine for degus, but they do better with what we call forage. These are natural grasses, flowers, leaves from various trees, various plants/weeds, and so forth. Fruit in general is not a food to feed your degus, way too much sugar. Broccoli is fine in small amounts, and since it is part of the cabbage family, it can cause a bit of stomach trouble, thus the small amounts. Gerbils require a very different type of menu, so the feed is definitely not the best choice for them, and it is good that you have removed it . . . there is a "but" though. To remove it cold turkey from their diet can cause stomach issues as well. It is easier on their tummies if we wean them off by mixing the old with the new 50/50 for a couple of days, then 60/40 for a couple of days, 70/30 . . . and you get the idea. This allows their body to adjust, rather than have a shock. Congratulations on your four new little loves, and welcome to the forum!! I love their names!

Clearly doing something right ... Eating drinking and chirping ...mad half hour ... Quick rest ... And repeat ... I don't think I have gotten anything done today just sitting near them and sneakily watching them

Such lovely names! They sound like they're happy to have a proper home with you. My degus love broccoli (I've only had them just under a week). I've only fed them a small amount once so as not to cause a stomach upset but I've read here & been told that forage is the way forward. It's very good for them & is preferable to veggies but that doesn't mean they can't sample a bit every now & then. I've also got dandelion & marigold timothy hay which is going down a treat with my two.  |
