Hi,
Can anyone confirm what temperature chinchillas should be kept at? I believed that it was 18-22C but I just wanted to check.
Many thanks, Matt

That sounds about right. From what I have read, too hot is a a problem for them so definitely under 26 degrees C.

We don't have many chin keepers here, but we have some links to other sources of info at the top of each board.

Yes, I've started to have a look through those. I've also done a search online, but at the one end it said somewhere that 10-15C was right, and somewhere else 18-24C. I will mention if I think I've found a definitive answer.

We keep goos but we tend to hedge our bets: if its comfortable for us its probably comfortable for them. Don't tend to worry if its a bit chilly, they have fur, but try to keep it cool in the summer.

Chins prefer the cool. The cooler the better. That said, I don't have any air on at home and my chins have been comfortable with an outside temperature of 30 celcius. Reddening of the ears, laboured breathing, and lying full out are signs that cooling action should be taken. Closed curtains or blinds, marble or terracotta to sit on, or a fan blowing over a large bowl of ice can all help. It's usually heat coupled with high humidity that does the most harm to chins. Use of a dehumidifier can be useful also .
