Definitely 2 boys, said the breeder. Definitely 2 boys, said the other degu owner Definitely 2 boys, said the people in the degu forum when I showed photos of the genitals. Definitely 2 boys agreed the internet when I compared genitals to text books. Hey everyone, I just mated! Said Carlos at 3am.
What am I going to do?
If Emilio is a girl, she's Carlos' sister.
I have neither the money nor the room to build a second cage to separate them for life. And finding a degu in my town is very difficult, so both would die of loneliness even if I could afford to separate them.
Is it possible Carlos was confused last night? Are there other occasions when they emit a steady stream of short chirps for a few minutes?
And if Emilio is pregnant with her brother's babies, should the babies be (humanely!) killed at birth because they're the product of incest? Can they live a healthy life?
More info: They are only 4 months old.

Don't panic just yet! Male degus have a tendency to shout about what they've 'been up to' even if it's self inflicted...if you catch my drift It sounds like you have triple checked that they are both males, but we could offer our opinions as well if you're still concerned.

Som degus can use barking as a way of announcing their territory. After deciding who's boss, the winner can bark to let any others know. My boys did this from time to time, the last being when they were in a period of conflict about a quarter of a year ago.

They can do it to themselves or a brother and still do the mating bark, no need to panic...no harm in checking again though!

Many, many degus of those living in captivity are the result of incest, so don't worry too much. How do you know? Have you seen him? YES! Bad dreams, bad mood etc. can also cause such a sound... sometimes for a long, looooooooong time.

We here this in our house quite a lot. It can mean anything from 'I'm happy/excited about this toy/peice of food etc' to 'help mum there's a bird on the roof'. The boys also make themselves 'happy' from time to time and bark then as well.

It wasn't just that he was chirping, but it was the steady, measured out chirps that sound exactly like the YouTube videos of post-mating calls. [See 3 posts below for photos of genitals]

It was #11 on this list: www.degutopia.co.uk/degusound.htm and since they're not female, that left post copulation as far as I could tell. I didn't know they do this noise for all sorts of things. Relieved to know there aren't any babies coming.
