On Friday May 8th my female degu gave birth to 1 pup I assumed that was all she was going to have but she still looked huge which seemed a little weird to me, but a lot of reading says it usually takes them about 45 minutes to give birth to all their pups. Then on May 10th late at night she gave birth to another pup which died. Then today May 11 in the afternoon she gave birth to another pup which survived. I picked her up and felt her and I can feel one more pup still inside her and I am still waiting for her to have this one. Has this every happened to anyone else? I've never heard of degu's taking this many hours to days apart to keep giving birth.

It's not normal at all, she must be in great distress, get her to the vet immediately.

Well I actually did have her seen by a vet on Sunday night when she started giving birth to the second one and mom actually seems to be doing good she doesn't seem to be stressed. She is eating and drinking and taking care of the two babies like she should. The vet is just having me watch her and we were letting her keep having the babies on her own.

OK, I'm glad you have the vet involved already. It's good that she is still eating and drinking and taking care of the two pups. Watch out for her getting distressed, change in eating habits, running when she wouldn't normally, hanging out in unusual places, anything like that as they hide pain really well. Did the vet give any indication of what they could do and how long they wanted to wait?
Is this a planned pregnancy? Have you removed the father to prevent her getting pregnant again?

We are currently trying oxytocin to try to induce contractions to try to deliver the last pup so hopefully it works. The next option would be a c-section which we are trying to avoid due to the anesthesia risk. Yes, this was a planned pregnancy but after this I am not going to breed her anymore. Yes I have removed the father.

I have my fingers crossed the oxytocin works for her.

So today we ended up doing the c-section/ovariohysterectomy. The oxytocin was not working and unless we did something she probably would have died. The surgery went well, the baby that was still inside her was not alive when we got it out. There was also a retained placenta which would have caused an infection if we hadn't done the surgery so I am very glad I chose to go ahead with the surgery. Now mom is recovering and is still feeding her 2 babies. She is not in the clear yet she still has a long recovery to go through so now i'm just hoping everything heals up well and she survives the recovery process.

Glad to hear that so far everything has gone fine.
But I have to say that I am shocked about the vet's statement on Sunday that everything is fine. I asked a friend of mine, degu owner and vet herself, and she was also very shocked hearing of such a long labour process and the vet's opinion. She suggested looking for another vet for a second opinion.
Wish you all the best as there is still the risk of complications due to surgery and intoxication because of the dead body and the placenta.

I am very sad to let you know that the mom died on Thursday night. Surgery is very hard on small pets and it was just to much for her body. It has been very hard on me but now I have two babies to focus on. So far everything seems to be going good with them I bought kitten milk replacer and feed them every 2 hours and they at least still have there daddy to be with them and keep them warm.

I'm very sorry you've lost mum.
However degus are excellent dads so its good that dad is there for them.
Good luck with the hand rearing!

Oh Honey! I am so, so sorry!! I really hoped she would pull through for you!! I suspect that the long and hard failed delivery and still born pup also have played a significant part in her passing. You really gave her the best care and the best opportunity to heal. I'm sorry that she didn't make it. I hope all goes incredibly well with feeding the pups. It is going to be exhausting for a while.

I'm very sorry about mom.
Good luck with the pups, you've got a difficult job on your hands there.
