I have a serious problem in my cage of my degus fighting. I removed the original problem, and have since re-homed him. I thought things were calming down, but found Gromit today with serious wounds. What do I do? If i seperate them, they have to fight again to decide who is boss, but if I keep them together, I am worried it will end up with Gromit dead! Any tips on things to do to stop the fighting?

Hello Sunshinemeg, you really got a serious problem there, what to do.... I think there unfortunatly is no easy solution. If the fighting gets to far, it is you who has to decide when to seperate them. Haven't they lived together for a while already!

Hi Heddy
Yes my degus had been together for quite a while. Gromit had been on his own till he was a year, then we had added Marmalade, and Marmalade was 2 years older than Charlie!
After a LOT of research we came to the conclusion that Charlie had reached adulthood and was no longer happy at the bottom of the pecking order. Marmalade bore the brunt of a fight that went wrong, meaning surgery, and then on returning to the cage he just wasnt going to forgive Charlie! This meant charlie was constantly fighting with Marmalade and generally getting everyone unhappy.
We decided to re-home him, and found someone through this forum who had lost one of her two degus at christmas. so He is now living in the north of the UK, and from his new owners reports, he is doing well!
I think the lesson here is that degus are bright creatures, and not likely to forgive and forget when they get hurt!!!
