So my beautiful little Stella had pups today. I think I saw about five but couldn't be too sure. I tried my best to have a look but when she started to pull more hay back in her nest, I decided to just leave her be Before I left i saw her eating something that wasn't her food. Now I'm not sure what it was but it was thick and red, and there was blood on her paws. Do you think she may have killed on of her pups? or eating a dead pup or just cleaning the after birth? any help would be much appropriated! these are my first goos and the first time this happened, tried to do as much reading as I could.

I haven't seen a birth myself but I imagine it could be the afterbirth. It's rare for a degu to eat a pup, but it is possible if it was still born or not properly formed.
Make sure mum has plenty to eat, preferably including some oil seeds or nuts for the calorie boost, apart from that try to leave her to get on with it for a couple of days.
Most important thing is that the father should be removed immediately because the mother comes into season straight after giving birth and it's not good for her to get pregnant again.
Have you got a plan for housing the babies in a few weeks?

I think it might have been afterbirth as well. either way she had 5 beautiful healthy pup and they're all fine and Stella is doing an amazing job looking after them. the other in the cage Nina is a girl, so all's fine there. I've got her plenty to eat but I'll be sure to get some oil seeds or nuts for Stella. Since there is 5, as long as there are females me and my little brother will be keeping one each (I have yet to sex them) and I'm buying a bigger cage next weekend, so I can keep any of the boys in the cage I've got now

Oh how I love pups!! If they weren't so hard to find homes for, in our area, and if I had a large area . . . like a heated garage, where I could keep them, (where the mess wouldn't get around the rest of the house) I would have more again. Although not with the purpose to become a breeder! Do enjoy them while you have them, they are so precious!
