Choosing Your Metal CagePlease use our cage size recommendations when choosing any cage deguworld.proboards.com/thread/9396/forums-cage-size-recommendationsAlways assess the space a cage offers in terms of the total running area offered by the total floor and shelf space. Don't be fooled by large volume cages which offer little running area. Look for all metal construction, plastic is not safe or secure for degus. Bar spacing should ideally be 11mm to be secure for all ages and sizes of degu. Larger spacing of 18mm is usually secure for adult degus, and sometimes large degus will be secure with 25mm mesh. Watch for bars being flexible and offering more escape opportunity than the given size would suggest. Look for large doors to allow good access for cleaning and cage modifications. Be prepared to make cage modifications to get a cage big enough for 3 or more degus and also to get the best out of a cage, for example fitting shelf edging (also called splashguards or kickboards) to keep the mess in. The most popular style of cage on the forum is the type made by a few manufacturers and variously called Liberta Explorer 2nd Edition, Aventura, Royal Suite, Xtrail, Critter Nation Double. These are all very similar but vary in the material of the trays (metal or plastic), depth of trays, single or double opening doors, bar arrangement, construction qualitiy and other minor details. These cages are 92cm long and therefore do not quite meet our recommended minimum cage length of 100cm. There is some discussion of pros and cons of these cages in this thread deguworld.proboards.com/thread/20578/buying-new-cage There is another cage called the Royal Suite XL of similar design but longer at 115cm which meets our recommended length, but unfortunately the shelves are made of plastic and so need replacing with something degu-proof.
