Sorry to hear about your loss, there are others on the forum who have more experience with pups/pregnancy, so hopefully one of them will respond soon. It might be worth giving us a bit of background on the mother, age weight, general health etc

Oh Hayley I'm sorry for you and your mummy degu.
I've read of this happening; it's no comfort but it may have been for the best for mum if things were not quite right.
Do you think it was all the pups? 5 is an expected litter size, but if there are any left in her then a vet will need to see her.
As Saddlers says, there are others on the forum with more experience of this.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Were you aware that she was pregnant? Is she housed with an unneutered male? I would definitely take her to be checked over by the vet, just to make sure that there isn't any underlying issues such as an infection in the uterus that caused her to miscarry.

My degu Azure had a miscarriage (four dead, premature pups). There was nothing special that I did for her – she seemed perfectly fine afterwards. Is your degu eating and drinking normally? Is she using her wheel?
I'm a bit concerned about your degu being so tired – Azure didn't go through that. I have read that miscarriages are very dangerous for the mum so keep an eye on her and keep us posted. Don't know what advice to give other than make sure she eats even if it means giving her oats and other treats.
As ilikedegus asked, how many pups did she miscarry? Don't know for sure but there is a chance that there are still others within her – possibly still alive (? not sure is this is possible?). Do you have a good vet with lots of degu experience?
Is there any continued bleeding? Does she still look pregnant?

Thanks to everyone who has gotton back to me. Mama degu miscarried 6 in total one the next morning she has become skinny and still not eating or drinking much so I am hand feeding. She has become quite cold so I have put a hot water bottle I'm with her to try and give her warmth and comfort although she does keep leaving the nest now and again. I am at the vets tomorrow with my male degu as he is getting neutered I am undecided if to take her with or if this will cause her more stress and to speak to vet and see if he can give me anything. Tbh I'm getting really worried for her. I just hope I can do something ?! Xx

I would definitely take her with you. She may need to be injected with fluids, and perhaps the vet upon looking at her will see something you would not have picked up on. I don't know if she could be grieving, but I do wonder if she has been hiding an illness and that is why she miscarried?

Unfortunately fat degu passed away last night. I was holding stroking and talking to her when she fell asleep. In about 4 hours she went from bad to worse although she was fighting for three days. I am devastated and really upset even just writing this it's crazy how much a little fellow can have such a massive impact on your life.
Her death was due to complications in birth in total she passed six babies who where all sadly still born.
I've come to realise that if I had known my third was a boy I wouldn't chance the getting pregnant as it's too much a risk. Whilst i never thought it would happen to my lots it did and I feel terrible for allowing it.
I now have an adult male and female ( female sister to fat degu) and their four naughty pups. My male is going to get neutered today but I am scared that something might happen to this little guy. So fingers crossed pleased
I would like to thank everyone for their help and advice over the weekend and I holdings comfort that I'm not just a silly fool who loves her degus so much
RIP fat degu.... U where one in a million, the size of two and the spirit of 10 love u baby xxxxx

I'm sorry she didn't make it.
I think many of us on this forum love our degus pretty much like kids, so you're amongst people who understand.
It's hard to lose mum and babies, even though it's just nature, we're so attached to the individual degu.
I'll have my fingers crossed for your boy. You will have to let us know how is is.

Thankfully my male is doing great no complications at all was tired at first but soon himself. He is still on his own but allowed to spend time supervised with the female. The babies visit him every day as the cheeky buggers can still fit through the bars of both cages lol. I still Missi fat degu and still about her as she always would respond! I've finally been able to sex my four other babies and I have three boys who will be going to a new home together and a female "the fat one" who I will keep Thank u to everyone for your kind words it's hard to get over as I love all my animals as if they are my children. Xx

Glad your boy is doing well.
We still miss our free-range goo Houdini and he's been gone 2 years...sometimes I remember how he'd pitter-patter across the bedroom floor (he had a nest down the side of the wardrobe) early in the morning to begin his day hanging out in my boyfriend's home office.
Just trying to say, I know how you feel. Little brown furry, BIG personality, BIG hole in your life.

I am new to owning pet goos and I adopted two sisters which I was told were about 13 weeks old two months ago so they're approximately 5 months old. My girlfriend and I just came home and found an unfortunate site. Disclaimer ( possible graphic detail) We found the remains of a baby degu's head laying on one of the shelves and after calming my girlfriend down I removed the tiny baby parts. Shortly after I found two more heads and a body with no legs or tail inside their hammock. After cleaning up the habitat and monitoring the recently discovered pregnant degu I witnessed her give birth to two more still born degus and proceed to start eating the soft body pieces before I could remove the babies. Is there anything I can do to help my goo before getting her to the vet? Shes acting what i would consider normal. Is miscarriage a common thing among degus?

Hopefully she will be OK, it's a normal response for her to try to eat the still born pups. Can you tell whether the pups look smaller than normal or do they look full term? It's quite a good idea to get her checked by a vet to make sure there aren't any pups left stuck insider her. I wouldn't say miscarriage and still births are all that common, but not exactly rare either, and far more likely with such a young degu.
You need to check right away whether you do actually have two females. If one of them is male it is very important to remove him right away to make sure she does not get pregnant again. She will be fertile again as soon as she finishes giving birth, it would be very dangerous for her to get pregnant again (at any time). Gestation is 3 months, so it could well be that she was with a male before you got her.
Because she is so young and has been through a bit of an ordeal, do make sure she is fed well to build her up again. We advise plenty of natural plants and forage and a selection of oil seeds, including high calcium oil seeds. Plenty of information in the diet area, including advise on commercial food, nutrition charts, forage information etc. Try and keep her nice and warm too while she recovers.
