Sorry to hear the problems, but it is quite natural for the male degus to fight over any female. They are fighting for the right to be the dominant degu, and so be her mate. To stop the fighting, you must either take away one of themales, but you will then be left with a breeding pair of degus, or else you must remove the female, and ensure she is in a different room so they cant smell her!
Good luck

Hello Astrokittles, The behaviour of your male Degus is unlike to change, no matter which one you get spayed. The girl remains a girl and both boys are crazy for her. Wheter she can breed or not, is not obvious to the boys. I recommend to do as sunshinemeg suggested. Split the group up (in different rooms if possible). Find another female, put the two girls together, so no Degu has to be alone. Cheers, Heddy

astrokittles, have you had any progress on the degu front? I hope you have not had to spay any of your degus, as this is a risky operation for something so small. I am sure that once the female is out of smelling range the male degus will strat getting on fine. Keep us posted with your progress!

Could I let the female live with my guinea pigs, or do I have to get her another Degu? Would she be happy with another species?

Could I let the female live with my guinea pigs, or do I have to get her another Degu? Would she be happy with another species? Thats an interesting idea. I have never personally tried keeping two species together, but have heard it is possible. It really depends on the individual animal, and their living conditions. Bare in mind that a degu wont like living outside however. Good luck, I know its a tough problem to have to work through, you have my sympathy. SUNSHINEMEG ;D

Hello astrokittles, I have heard of experiments like that, but it never was successfull. Degus are very social animals and no other species can replace an other Degu. Probably for the short term it is nicer than beeing all on her own, but you better get her a pal of her own species sooner rather than later.

Barrie Ontario (one hour north of Toronto)
We adopted what we thought were 2 girls. I believe our fat degu (fondly referred to as 2x4) is preggie and our nurotic skinny one David is a boy. Other household members are saying that 2x4 is just FAT
