I live in Toronto, Canada. I purchased my degus Barkley and Yuki at a small pet store in my neighbourhood. I've only met 2 other people in the last 2 years that know what a "degu" actually is. Everybody else goes "huh???" when they hear the word "degu". I know degus are popular in some European countries. The two people met who knew about degus were European. One was Swiss, the other I think was Norwegian. Sad thing is that my pet shop stopped selling degus, guess they aren't that popular here yet.
Hi Meg!

I had the same trouble when I was trying to find a Degu to replace my original (the new arrival was Gromit!) I phoned every pet store in my addition of the yellow pages, took several hours, but nobody knew what a Degu was!! In the end Gromit was rescued from a garden centre where they didnt know how to care for them properly. In fact, I went back there the other day, and nearly came home with two more, yet another injured tail left untreated, and a skin irritation. This is fast becomming a personal crusade on my part, and I dont think that the garden centre like me much anymore!! When I get annoyed I shout very loud!!!!!

Hello, I live in Prague, Czech Republic. I bought my first degu (Mickey) this march and in only four days I obtained a girlfriend (Minie) for him. I don't know how old are they but they had to be matured when I bought them because only after 4 months 3 babies were born . I think degus are getting more and more popular in our country for every pet shop I've visited so far sells them and I know few people who have degus at home. Because it's difficult to describe what degus look like to people who've never seen any degu I say to them that degu is something like "squirrelmouse" :-). To Vic: Do people say "huh" when they hear word "degu"? It's nothing to what happens to me! The degu's name in the Czech is "osmak degu" (translation of latin Octodon degus). It's funny name because "osmak" also means student/pupil in the 8th class . When I say that I breed couple (or even family!) of "osmak" at home people look at me as if I went mad .

you can tell your pet shop from me, the degu as a pet is still a relatively uncommon choice in many parts of the world. They are still considered "exotic" by veterinary practises, and the information available is only just becomming more wide spread! Id say your pet shop should check out this webpage!!

I bought my degus in Wolverhampton, UK. They seem to be a bit smaller than the ones I see on pictures, but they are still lovely!!!

Hello, I first saw degus in a pet shop in Germany. On the continent there seem to be a real hype - at least in the cities. They are not close up with Hamsters yet, but they are "conquering the continent"... Hope that tendency will make it to Britain soon.

I'm from Earlham, IA, USA - just outside our state capital of Des Moines. I had NEVER heard of a degu until we rescued the ones we now have. Our pet shops know very little about them here, so i have no idea where the family that had them before got them! Pet shop actually told us to pick them up BY THE TAIL!!!!! Glad I learned otherwise quickly (hooray for the internet!)!

Hi I live in Southampton, England and I had never even heard of Degu's until September 03. I sadly lost my lil friend Fink (a rat) in September and I was aimlessly wandering into a tiny pet shop in Hythe when I saw two sets of beautiful lil eyes peeping out from a pile of hay in the pets department! I asked the lady what the whiskery lil chipmunk things were and it turned out she was a Degu breeder! Anyway after nearly an hour of chatting with her and selecting a nice new cage I went home a proud new mum with the two lil cuties from the pet shop and have not looked back! Widget & Fidget have now been upgraded to a new and larger home (they were no longer then my thumb when I first took them home but are much larger now!!) and now everyone I know has been educated as to what a Degu is! ;D

Hi I live in Southampton, England and I had never even heard of Degu's until September 03. I came across Degus by accident also! I used to have Jerds as pets, and found some more in a garden centre one afternoon, this was years ago when I was about 15, and I asked my parents if I could get another, but they firmly said no. Later that afternoon we went to a second centre (my parents were mad about gardening) and I spotted these odd little critters in a cage. I tried my luck again, pointing out that they were different from Jerds, and we went home with 2! One was returned in a few days cause we didnt think the should be fighting. Gizmo was a lonely boy! And Im glad when I got Gromit I had the sense to do some research! And now here we are! Many years later and we have this amazingly popular website and forum!!! SUNSHINEMEG ;D

I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA. I hadn't heard of Degus until I got three of them for Christmas this year. I am having some problems with them however. I haven't been able to keep them in the same cage because the older male beats up the younger male. He leaves the young female alone completely.
