Hello Buffy,
I would tend not to put them in the same cage. The Chins are active during night time, the degus are active during most of the day aswell. The Chins might feel disturbed by the little ones. Cant you seperate a bit of the Chins cage and use it for the degus? This would be a more desirable solution for both groups, as none group's sleeping place could then be intruded by the other species when its bedtime for one of them.

I have had some people contact me via the webpage that have successfully housed Chinchillas and Degus together. They are very closely related anyway, so it is possible. It all depends on the individual animal and how they get on with others! ;D

Talked to some other fellows, who got Degus and Chins. They do not keep them in one cage, but give them a run in the room together sometimes. It seems as long as there is enough room for them to avoid unwanted contact, they are fine....and one more thing dawned on me: their Degus and Chins meet on no ones territory! If you want to try putting them together, it probably increases the chances to work out well without much hazzle, if you take the Chins out, clean the cage very properly (in order to destroy most of the Chins' smelly landmarks) and then put all of them in together. This might make it rather new territory for all of them and the Chins do probably not tend to fight for their old territory too much. Just an idea!

good point heddy! You do need to make sure that nobody feels dominant by the cage smelling like it is theirs.
I do still think it could be possible to have them living togther, but agree that all of the occupants would need enough space to move around.
