Please bare with me as this post will be long, I just want to make sure I do not leave anything out.
A friend of mine bought my daughter a standard gray chinchilla female, Her name is Izzy. My daughter is 15 and every since she was little has had a passion for animals. She now has decided she wants to become a vet that works specifically with exotic animals. Knowing this about her I had no reluctance on allowing her to keep Izzy. Approx 2 months after having Izzy the neighbors were doing construction and ended up causing the power to go out. (live in a duplex) My daughter called me after school and told me she came home to find Izzy going through heat stroke, She told me she had already placed Izzy in the freezer( door open and her right there with her) I immediately rushed there and took Izzy straight to the vet. The vet issued critical care and reglan. Izzy seem to make a full recovery. During this time of recovery Izzy stayed with me ..( Daughter stay with my mother during the week in order to go to a better school and I stay closer to my job.)
My mother did not really understand what had happened or anything about chinchillas for that matter. She felt like my daughter was sad and proceeded to go out and buy her a female chinchilla. Named Zena. So I have Izzy I have become so attached , No matter what the day is like Izzy always brings a smile to my face and after recently having had my husband pass away I truly believe Izzy is bringing me out of the depression of that situation( please do not make jokes I already know how crazy that sounds) .. I was reading stories online of people whom think their chin is ill and says they can not afford to take them to a vet. I pulled money from my savings and opened a savings account starting with 700 and I add a little to it every paycheck, I am not rich but I refuse to god forbid have something happen and then me let her suffer I could never grasp that..
So now here we are 4 months later and I have bought Izzy the critter nation cage model 162 and she is doing very well. My whole living room area is chin proofed so after buying the small animal playpen to block off my kitchen I simply close the hallway door , I always do a quick vacum and then open her cage and she proceeds with playtime. When she feels like she has had enough she knows how to hop right back into her cage. I have learned if she hops back in I wait a couple minutes and sometimes she goes in to simply grab a drink of water as her water bottle is on bottom level, If she is going back in for good she lets me know this buy running up to the top level , Then I know she is done and I secure her cage doors.
Very loving doesn’t bark bite spray none of that, So here is the issue, I came across a chinchilla another female and fell instantly, Knowing there is a chance they may not get along I bought another cage and all that she could possibly need. I have had their cages side by side for about 2 weeks. I only allow the new girl out in the small animal playpen that i purchased for her. I will do this until I feel like she is adjusted and comfortable. So here recently I allowed Izzy out while Zorro was in the playpen making sure the top was covered so neither could jump out to the other, They run and play and often stick their noses to each other and I never see aggression. So with sheet in hand I had a friend help me try to introduce them and at first it seemed like they were playing but I felt like Izzy was doing more chasing as Zorra was doing the running , I stopped them instantly and separated them. I then noticed a small bit of fur on the floor. I checked both of them very well to make sure no injuries and neither had any injuries.
Does the fact that Zorra I assumed slipped a little fur and that she ran from Izzy indicate they will never get along? If this ends up being the case would it cause trauma to Izzy if I were to separate the bottom level of the cage from the top. The cage I have has a ramp that can be clipped up to make the one cage into 2.. I feel like Zorra looks at me like why does Izzy have such a huge cage and I have a small one, But I do not have room for 2 huge cages.. Should I give up on trying to introduce them, Please some tell me what to do, I want them to both be happy
