Cherattwellx's chinchilla with possible bone infection

I have a chinchilla, she's 1 years old. She had an abscess on her chin. The vets did an x-ray on her teeth and there are no problems, they don't know what caused her to get the problem but they have noticed a thickness on her jaw which they think might be the problem, they have removed the abscess but the thickness is still there, she is on antibiotics at the moment, but the vets don't know what else they can do as they think there is an infection in the bone. Is there anything else a specialist vets would be able to do? Thank you

Hi, I currently have a degu with suspected osteomyelitis in the tail as well. The vets I see aren't really "specialists" in degu care but they're doing a good job and are willing to both learn and to listen to the things I have to say. Really, the only possible options for bone infections are a long course of antibiotics, and if there is an open wound to bathe it with salt water to draw out the infection. If this doesn't work then the only other option is amputation, which is probably not an option for a jaw.

Of course, your vets may be able to email the x-rays to a specialist to see if they have any other ideas? It's worth asking anyway.

Have they done a culture of the infection so they can target it with a suitable antibiotic? That's the only other thing I can think of.
