Sounds like you are doing really well!! I am so glad for you that you are feeling more confident now. I know know that feels, and can well remember how out of my depth I felt when my husband and kids decided to bring home two degus and I knew NOTHING about them. They were SUPPOSED to be for the kids to take care of, but I knew better. It would be my job before the week was out . . . and it was, only before the day was out. Anyhoo, finding out about them became paramount to maintaining my sanity, and this forum was a God send! I totally understand how you have been feeling. Do you have the means to post a picture of the changes you have made to Gimili's cage? I would love to see what it is looking like, not to mention the star inhabitant of said cage.

Story has progressed, Gimli is getting his bits done on friday, ready for 3 females found on the adoption board........ Was only browsing, considering the best way forward, and well a plea from someone local was there so, well here we are. They will be coming with their cage, which is big enough for 4, although I may play and put in more shelves etc. For now, here's a picture of the cage - Gimli is hidden in hay in the corner

I must agree, TOO cute!! Congratulations on finding him some girls to love and live with. I'll be keeping you and Gimli in my thoughts, especially on Friday. Please do let us know how his surgery progresses, and how he is doing after? I hope the very best for him and you!!

Hey
thank you for your kind thoughts for Gimli. He's doing well, though unfortunately not so trusting of me! Not helped I fear by my catching him on Friday evening, and squirting painkiller into his mouth. He was sitting looking so unhappy, and not interested in food, so I figured it was the lesser of 2 evils. The next couple of lots he took on a bit of apple, and apart from sleeping a bit more, his pretty much back to normal! My main worry is that he has taken to chewing the bars of the cage, which is new for him. It's not the biggest cage, but he has been fine until now, especially once I put the ledges with lots of ramps in.
The girls are going to be collected on Thursday. They will be having a slow introduction, as Gimli can't be in physical contact for about 6 weeks, don't want any accidents! I'm also going to be making a cage once my exam is over - so about the right time when full intros are taking place. Think it might be helpful to put them in a totally neutral place too, no-one is invading anyone else's territory! Have been on the introductions section, and also looked over several cage building sites. Will post pictures when it is done!

That is great news, Jose was a bar biter when he was alone, and whilst he still does it now and again, since his female friend arrived he has been doing it a lot less often. My male/female introduction went really well and I hope you get the same result.
Shreddies were Jose's favourite way of taking his meds although we had to do the wrestle now and again!!
My other lone Male Elliott is supposed to be going in tomorrow, if I can get there!!

Well, the harem has arrived, they are settling slowly, don't know me, don't trust me, and as for the odd bloke next door......... I'm talking to them and just giving them a bit of time. Gimli on the other hand hasn't shut up! He's squeaking, chirruping and warbling away. And really not so interested in me anymore. I'm guessing that is a good sign! Really quite excited about the prospect of building a cage and having a happy little colony.

That all sounds very positive I'm sure the girls will settle soon enough. Are the girls mostly ignoring Gimli/ treating him with disdain? This would be a good sign. We usually find vets say to keep boys seperate from girls for around 2 weeks after their neutering.

The girls are totally ignoring his existence. However I'm not too worried by that at them moment. They have just moved house and although they are in their own cage, it is only a part of it as I don't have room to put the whole lot up and put Gimli next to them (dining room is still completely taken over by the degu introduction suite! ), so I'm thinking they really need a bit of time before getting interested in this strange chap and his continued chat up lines (at least I assume that is what all the noise is about ;D) The vets I saw said 4 weeks first, then at the check up I was told 6 weeks. I may start brief intros at the 4 week mark, but exam is beginning of March, so the new cage won't be ready until about the 6 week mark. So that kind of works. I'm keen to take it slow, and make sure it really works out.

Guidance on the web seemed to indicate 2 weeks, but after Elliott was neutered I asked our vet and they said 3-4 weeks would ensure no issues.

Not too bad he seems to have a slight penis prolapse at the moment, but we had similar with our last male who was neutered, but is not as bad. I have started to wonder whether the females close by are causing a bit of excitement, and then the swelling is preventing it from retreating fully.
Lovely topic of conversation ;D
I hope he enjoys his new company, how is Gimli recovering?
