Hi!
A jird is a bit like a Mongolian gerbil to look at - but bigger - nearer to a rat, size-wise. They live a bit longer though. They were lovely.
I live in Shirebrook - near Mansfield and about 1/2hour from Chesterfield. Shirebrook's where I'm from - I was born here in fact! I lived in Wirksworth in the Peak District for quite a while, but I've had to move back home because of ill health. Hopefully once I'm back on my feet and working again etc I can move out again. ;D Taking my critters with me, of course!

Hi! I just got 2 male degus about a month ago in Ontario, Canada while I was camping. Someone was giving them away and since I knew a little about them, I decided to get some. They are now in Ohio, learning to be Americans! I've learned a ton about them and I love my little guys, who my son named 'Sparkle' and 'Luna' (my son is 5). They are so vocal! I have parakeets as well and it's a toss-up over who makes the most noise! I was happy to find this place, I have so much more to learn about them.

Hi Meg. I saw this site about a month or so ago and was so excited, I wanted to join right away to be able to chat with other Degu lovers but couldn't for some reason. Anyways thanks so much for helping me Meg! Im excited to be a member here now! ;D So I have two degus. Both females (I think) I got them from the humane society and they figured they are about 2 years old. They found them abandoned in an apartment building lobbey. Anyways I named them Princess and Ginger. They arent very friendly. They are sweet to watch though. They haven't become tame to me yet. I know it will take some time. I got them in May. Anyways I just wanted to say hi to everybody and give Meg a huge thanks for her help.

Hi everyone, I'm new. My name is Carissa - I'm 27 years old and married. I own 2 degus (females) - I think they're both a year or two but I'm not fully sure. Nerys (from Star Trek: Deep Space 9) was my first degu - she's what I affectionately call my "defective degu" - when I bought her from the pet store, she already had half a tail as it got caught in a store cleaning accident. I chose her because she was the more affectionate one. Now she's the least - go figure. Idril (from JRR olkien's Silmarillion) is the younger of the two. Full tail and the most affectionate little thing. I got her as a companion for Nerys. In addition to 2 degus, I also own 2 cats and a dog. Since this is a degu thread I won't mention much about them unless asked. Anyhow, nice to meet you all. Degu PicturesCat PicturesDog PicturesPic of me

Hi Carissa and welcome! I'm a DS9 fan - like the name! I actually don't have any degus atm, though I have 8 rats - lol! But I do intend to have them in the future, so I come on here to learn and to enjoy the pics of degus, to keep me 'topped up' until I can get my own. I have done lots of research, but the best way of learning is by reading other people's experiences, so here I am! Lovely pics of your degus - they're gorgeous.

Hi Carissa!
I too have two female Degus. Mocha is the mother of the other Degu Tanzania Peaberry. (runt of litter=longest name!)
My Degu experiences have been - gee I don't know how to describe them! Mocha came to me as a male who I named Virgil. About 6wks after "he" came to live with me "he" had nine Degu puppies 8 of which survived. 5 males, 3 females. I though it best to keep one of the females as a companion for Mocha. The two of them get along very well.
This bulletin board and Meg's website with links has been a Godsend. There is so little written about Degus and so much of that is contradictory. Our shared experiences here are invaluable.

Hey hey!! I bought my 8-year-old daughter a couple of degu from my local petshop at the end of summer, assured that they were male. They werent, and one of them rapidly got renamed from pepper to peppermint... And so, just before midnight on New Years Day, little degu babies started making an appearance! (at least 4 at the last check but time for bed now!!!) This is a great site, full of great advice and tips - I did loads of research and came to a lot of the same conclusions myself, plus I've had rats as pets all my life. Speaking from experience, rats and degu get on pretty well, although I'd be dubious about housing them together. They play with no trouble though, and even groom each other! Fat Freddy, an ancient rescued rat who has had a stroke gets the most, both degu will groom him, but mostly play with Digger, a younger female rat. I'm sure its whats keeping him alive, he must be at least 6 now and lost his brother over a year ago. Degu are REALLY friendly and caring little things! A little tip for people wanting to introduce new degu to each other, which is an adapted rat trick - buy some vanilla cake flavour (NOT the cheap stuff!!!!), add a few drops to an atomiser or spray of warmish water and spray them all. Dont soak them, but they do need to be wet. Then you can put them straight together in a warm, fresh cage with a sand bath, they will dry themselves and groom, and the sandbath will make them smell the same for the couple of days it takes for them to get comfortable. If you spray your hands too, they will adopt you as readily! Sneaky, but effective. Of course you may have 2 degu that just plain hate each other, but spraying can also be used to resolve some territorial issues in an existing group. Not, however as a deterrent to fighting, as I've seen suggested elsewhere on the net. If they repeatedly fight after spraying, separation is the only answer. Well, a Happy New Year to all!

I have 3 female degus. ( I am new to the degu thing) 1 is supposedly mom, and the other 2 are her older young. They are fighting. Is this simply a dominance thing that eventually stop? They are in a giant 4 story ferret palace, and have a lot of toys.

I am too lazy to make an introduction so I will copy and paste mine from the Degu Yahoo Group.
Hello, my name is Jordan. I am 19 years of age and my college pet is a degu. While I am not a college anymore, I since then moved back home to my parents who have 3 cats. I am afraid that the cats will think of my degu, Dero, as "food" so I keep my door to my room shut, where my degu is at. My degu is very social and friendly. He likes company. While he is tame, he is not tame enough for me to catch him to pet him. I usually have to reach in the cage and pet his head with my finger. He really "grooves" when I scratch behind his ears and neck.
I bought my degu at a pet store in Athens, Ohio in October. I've read (on degus.org) that sugar isn't really recommended for degus so I usually feed him pellets and water. I am afraid to feed him any fruits or vegetables due to sugar.. but is it okay to feed him pieces of fruits and vegetables because it's natural? For snacks and chew toys I give him popsickle sticks. Right now, my degu lives in a terranium (it's larger than normal size) with bedding and a wheel aswell as cardboard tunnels and wooden boxes for him to crawl through.
While I think his enviroment inside his home is a bit small, he doesn't seem to complain. I am very happy to have joined a community for degus. It is so hard to find any information from them and am glad to have finally be able to talk to owners of degus too! This really pleases me so I can get help if I need to aswell as share ideas that I have learned so far! I will be sure to post as often as I can. Until my next post, my name is Jordan and my degu is Dero.
