So... I got my degus! I brought Wade and Herren home last night. I'm not sure who is who yet, because I'll need to spend time watching them first and right now I'm letting them settle in. The lil' guys are so adorable though I can't wait to build them their new home - their temporary cage is a little sad, but it will have to do for now. It's not like hideously small, but it's not ideal, either. It'd be appropriate for two or three rats, but like I imagined, degus are nothing at all like rats. For the time being, they've been nibbling on their hay, run on their wheel a little, and hiding *behind* their hidey-house rather than inside of it. Typical, am I right? So, aside from the shock of moving, they seem happy and healthy enough!

They are total sweeties They ate some oats out of my hand today. I'm starting off by letting them take snacks from my hand and such. I know better than to just reach in and grab them - I've had plenty of small critters before, and none of them like it when you're too forward like that. I still can't quite tell them apart yet, and it's reminding me of the time I had identical Chinese hamsters and I had to use pink (non-toxic) hair dye on one of their bellies so I could tell them apart But since these guys have no white spots, that trick's not going to work, so I'll just have to stare them down until I find some minute difference between them. I'll get a picture or two tomorrow afternoon. I only have my phone's camera these days, and it doesn't take good pictures in low light.
