Hey, fellow goo lovers.
I just had a random question about my degus (had them for quite a while, so I'm not a newbie or anything.
A while back my degu, Dexter ended up pregnant by her mate, Connor (unintentional male and female pair), and was sadly having pregnancy complications, so she had a c-section and ended up having nine babies (they all passed inside her uterus before we could find a vet who would see her), and so the vet also spayed her just to stay safe.
I was wondering if any of you have gotten a degu spayed and still ended up having that same degu pregnant? I know it's extremely unlikely, but Dexter has been gaining a bit of weight (I have no way to weigh her), and it's quite visible. I have them in the same cage and her mate looks like he still weighs the same amount. It's very unlike her to gain weight. I don't go overboard with treats and they get a low-fat daily food. I don't know if she's just over-eating or if there is something more going on? I'm terrified that somehow she ended up pregnant again, and what with what happened last time, it scares me because that was hard on both her and I.
Any ideas? I can't take her to the vet to get looked at (broke at this particular moment).

Hey You!! I've been thinking of you and wondering how you're doing!! So good to see you again, hon!
I don't have experience with a spayed degu . . . but I'm thinking that since they take both ovaries AND the uterus, there should be no danger of another pregnancy occuring. There just isn't any equipment there to host or produce babies with. She should be OK. I think that you should just keep an eye on her, and see if she continues increasing in size. I wouldn't change her diet at this point, as she is likely still within healthy weight ranges.
How are you doing?

Yeah a spay tends to mean taking everything out - unless the vet just tied the tubes. Could be worth ringing and asking? Should be pretty much impossible for a spayed animal to get pregnant though

Deguconvert: Hey, there. Sorry I haven't had the chance to get online lately. I'm doing alright. Same old, same old. What about yourself, dear? Thank you to all three of you. You've all eased my mind quite a bit. I think she's just becoming a bit of a chunkster at the moment. She does tend to keep all the food for herself. Poor Connor.
