Morning!! Simeon has made it through the night (I think, he was having a wander earlier, I hope he is now just sleeping). Not sure if we could add a poll to this, I need opinions on what to do next. Do we keep him here for the winter (not sure my mum will be impressed when she comes to visit) Do we pop him out in the garden while the sun is shining today Do we wait a few more days and see how he goes He liked the carrots and had some lettuce and cabbage, can they smell food or should I keep showing him where it is? Oh boy I thought degus were complex ;D

I think he might be an easy target if you put him out side and he's injured

He should be able to find the food on his own, not sure if they smell it or not.... i'll have to look in to this Ermm if you put him out then he maybe food for little birds but if you keep him in then some bird may die from not having food You could always keep him and watch him grow but if you want you can always get african land snails, alot bigger and more interesting to watch and they like beer ;D I'm sure if you put him out side he would find some place to bed down for winter but there is the chance he will become fod fr a bird or maybe some reptile.

I could put him out under my shed, it gets any warmth n sunshine going. I feel sorry for him being out of his natural environment but then again he will be easy pickings for any of the other creatures out there. Maybe I could put out extra bird feed for the winter to make up for them missing a meal. I did think about African Land Snails a few years back but I'm not sure if I find them facinating or kind of EEeewwww slime.
Are snails nocturnal? Or do they enjoy sunshine when its damp etc?

So I couldn't help myself and woke him up. put him down on the lettuce, carrot etc.. he had a few bites then made a B line for the roof again Is he OK?

Yes he should be fine, Snails will try to make a B line for any way out. Snails like to come out when its damp/wet and abit cooler so not sure if nocturnal as such. You could put him out but it shouldn't do any harm to keep him in. I put out food for the birds anyways The giant snails rock you should get some they are great to watch.

I've always wanted a giant snail! I think they're amazingly adorable! I definitely think you should keep Simeon how do you pronounce this? Is it sigh-mun...or sih-moan? (If that makes sense haha) Keep up with the pics! I'd love to see his set up! And I think the dirt/soil substrate is perfect, but maybe put some other terrain in there for him to climb (thick twigs, big rocks, small rocks etc)

Thanks for the continued support guys @ Kins n Moletteuk - I'm glad you are finding it amusing ;D dyzired - it is pronounced Sim - Eeee - On. Oh, and thanks for the video of snail care, I think I just did everything about right My Mum is visiting tomorrow, I will have to try and explain why I have a wild snail living in a fish tank in the lounge - no doubt she will think it is cruel So, current set up: 1 fishtank, around 10inch long, 10inch high and 7inch wide. Substrate, potting compost (it's all i had) 2 Scallop shells, one for hiding under and one for water A struggling Geranium plant, I thought he might like the greenery and it makes it look pretty 2 Palm sized pepples for him to crawl over. As its a fish tank I have a light to fit in it but that would be inside the tank so may burn his little bum. He is soo tiny, the shell is just under 1cm, at full stretch I think he may make 4cm. We got a fab pic of him last night but it was taken on a different phone so not sure if we can upload to my laptop He was in his water dish with a bit of lettuce having a little drink and munch

Simeon is still with us My Mum wasn't too impressed as I guessed, she wanted to put him outside, we kept her occupied with other stuff until she left ;D She came back for a couple of days last week - and yes Sim is still in his tank, she asked rather abruptly " is that poor thing still in there?" so I said no, we went on to ensure that he hid out the way ;D Next problem - Mum is visiting again in about an hours time , she kept threatening to put him out Should I move his tank to my bedroom and pretend he has been released, should I leave the tank as is and hope he doesn't show his face while she is here? Hopefully here are a couple of pics of the set up and sim having some out time

I just thought I'd clean Simeon's tank out so it looks a bit bare. Mum will not notice him -- silly Simeon fell out of bed and now will be climbing about all over the place. He is now covered with a tea towel - ie yes mum I am using it as a table ;D

Simeon has out time? I do hope won't decide to take your degus on! I suppose your cables etc are safe around him, too. At least he shouldn't be as distructive as the goos can be. I'm really enjoying hearing about the adventures that are growing around Dusty, OH, Simeon and the visits of Mum. Sounds like a comedy theme perfect for the tellie!

And so it continues - Simeon is still here hiding in his tank. Mum is staying nearby with relatives so can visit every day!!!. No mum simeon is not still in that tank *cowers in corner* I have considered releasing him to the garden but he has become part of the household. Would he be happier if we let him go? He seems ok, but will only seem to eat cabbage Maybe they dont eat so much this time of year. Mum is expected this afternoon for a visit, I thought I'd hide his tank in my room but then I wanted mum to help me sort that room out - there is the spare room but again mum treats that as hers so no doubt will wander in there at some point. Oh Sim you will just have to stay in hiding till she leaves. The next prob is how do I ask mum to give me a lift to the local wildlife rescue without telling her why I need to go? Yes I am thinking of over wintering a hedgehog She will not be impressed

So he is stil going well? Glad to hear, i think its up to you if you want to let him go or not, but i'm sure he is enjoying himself (no other snail trying to steal his food ;D ) You just need to give your mum a sob story and say that all these animals will die if you don't look after them all

Oh no, bit of a moral dilemma there with your mum! I wouldn't recommend fibbing to your mum....mainly because she might find out! If he's only eating cabbage, I'd probably set him free and then get some african land snails if you have caught the snail bug, there must be some good info out there on how to keep those. ...or you could feed him to the hedgehog (sorry! )
