Went into the pet room this morning about half hour ago to find avert skinny lolly greeting me at the cage door! Little bit of blood noticeable on her wooden house....beans guarding the house. Peeped in to see atleast two squirming degu babies!

Congrats Don't forget you need to take Mr Goo (is that Beans?) out right away, before she finishes giving birth Prepare yourself as he could get a bit distressed.

He's out. She gave birth during the night so he was out the minute I noticed. Hopefully he's not caught her. He's in a cage next to them so he can still see them all On another note I'm booking him in for the snip, when's the best time to get this done regarding fully taking him away from the babies and mummy and as he will have stitches I'm guessing it wouldn't be safe to put him back in, but as I know mummy needs help after her most fertile period is up. I'm confused as to when to have him booked in. Any suggestions?

I'm seriously panicking that beans caught lolly before they were separated. The babies were nice and clean and looked like they had been born for a while when I got up this morning. beans is in a seperate cage from lolly now and will not stop squeaking and chirping...unhappy boy!

Well you've done everything you could when you found them this morning so I guess it's just a case of wait, hope and see. It would be far from ideal if he did but you couldn't blame yourself for it. For the moment, just spoil him silly and give him a bit of company to stop him from getting too wound up if you can!

Congratulations!! As Newtogoos said, just give Bean more attention . . . maybe even carry him around with you for a while, and it will help, but he will still miss Momma and his babies.

Thank you for the advice both of you. He's sat watching tv with me having some oats. He keeps jumping on the back of the sofa and calling for her. Wish I had a husband that caring haha!

No not yet. I didn't want to disturb her to much, she's nested in an awkward wooden house.she meets me happily at the cage door so Iv had some peeks and made out three but I think there could possibly be a forth. Il have a look in the morning. I'm a bit unsure as to when I can have a look, she's a lovely girl and didnt mind me at all peeking in. When Iv bred my hedgehogs your not even supposed to look in for a week to two weeks.

Degus are amazing parents, and also remarkably trusting of their pups. Some mums will squeak at you, but they don't turn on their pups, nor do they turn on their people. Although, I must say that one of our mums needed about a week before she would relax, so we didn't push her, but our others have all been very trusting and at ease with us being around their pups. You can even begin to pick them up about day three. OH, and if you find that one has wandered away from the next, don't hesitate to pick it up and put it back, as in their first weeks the pups are unable to regulate their body temperatures well, so need to be kept warm. You'll find that they are VERY adventurous little loves!
