Hi everyone.. I have a big problem.. I have 2 degus, girl and a boy.. She got kids 8 days ago.. 5 of them.. Everything was fine until last night.. We traveled for 3 hours, they were in a same cage.. When we came home, mommy stopped eating.. She doesn't want to try anything.. And i think she doesn't have a milk, cause babies are jumping on her all the time, to feed them, and they didn't do it before, not that much.. I don't have a vet in my town (last time, my boy was hurt, and when i got there, vet asked me what is that -.-). i asked in a pet-shop, they told me to mix water and milk, an try to feed all of them, but they don't want to try.. i don't know what to do

Perhaps mommy was just stressed by the travel. Keep trying to feed her – oats, puffed rice, sunflower seeds, anything. Leave a small pile of it nearby and see if she attempts to eat. She should start once she's settled down.
When the babies jump on her, are they latching on?

We travel a lot, its not her first time.. I puted a lot of food, everything she likes but nothig.. She just took one sunflower seed, when i opened it for her.. Yes she lies all the time, with kids, feeding them.. kids usually eat and then lie next to her, or run around but know, all they do is trying to eat..

Get to the vets. As I'm sure you know the babies won't survive without milk. I really would have gone to the vets as soon as I had noticed it. I know their isn't one in your town but I would try to go out of town. It may seem like a lot but I'd go as soon as possible. If not, I think you should try the milk and water thing, if the mum can't feed them, then its up to you. Hope I've helped x

I went to a vet, and my girl has inflammation of the uterus.. Probably started to hurt yesterday, when i putted her in a same cage with a boy.. she got iv and some antibiotics.. we will go tomorrow again.. she ate a little bit of corn after that.. so i hope she will start to eat normal..

My goodness. Your (and taintedstardom's) instincts were right on. Wishing a speedy recovery for Mom. How are the babies doing?

I think kitten milk is an appropriate substitute milk for the pups, if you want to try feeding them with a syringe or from a teaspoon or your finger. Wheatgerm is a good option to try to introduce solid food.
Hoping for the best for Mommy goo.

Well that's hopeful if she is producing a little milk and the pups are trying to eat solids. I'm not sure if cow's milk is good because of the lactose, can you buy special lactose free milk in the USA? Or maybe even soya milk?

Soya milk would probably be good. I used to drink it all the time when I went vegan. I'm pretty sure degus would like it too

Regular milk will definitely not be good for them at all in my opinion. You're in the USA? So am i.. And ANY pet store will sell puppy or kitten milk. And most will have goats milk, which I would recommend over Anything. It's in a powdered form and you use only what you need at a time. And for that, use two parts milk/1 part water. Warm it up. And feed with syringe. What I did for my goos when I couldn't get them to want to drink the milk, I made regular chamomile tea with a DROP of honey.. And that got them used to the syringe (and got some energy in them) and eventually they got used to the milk. And when feeding, I held them kind of straight up and down, and propped them up in my hand so my thumb was along their belly and propping their face up. And once you get them used to it they will go nuts over it. And also anther suggestion is sit on a bed while doing that. They jump out of your hands very easily. And if they're still very little, I'd feed them 5 times a day. They will go downhill fast without milk, and once they get bad, it's hard to get them back up to good health again. I wish you all the best and please keep us updated!

Yeah.. Every two hours is correct. And are you sure you just didn't know about puppy/kitten milk? Have you asked any pet shops? Just curious

I would recommend that you add barley grain and fennel seeds to your degu feed for the mommy degu. Barley may help boost her milk production, and fennel will help with her appetite and milk production . . . at least it does in humans. Dill is also a good stimulant and good calories for her.
