Another curiosity question from me!
I have been wondering this for quite a while. Can you get chinchillas to sit on your lap and be stroked or played with? I have heard that they can be quite skittish and bitey but I was wondering if other owners have had different experiences with their chinchilla's. Could you compare their temperament to another animal?
Just wondering, I may get one in the future...

Depends entirely on the Chinchilla, how it was raised and how much time you devote to it. But yes, they can be.

Could you compare them to any other animals? Can they become as friendly as degus?

Hey,
I have two chinchillas Pablo and Chaco...both are rescues. If you're after a cuddly pet then chinchillas are probably not the best idea.
From my experience they don't like being held. Chaco hates being picked up/stroked so we have no contact with him apart from when HE decides to sit on my knee. Pablo LOVES tickles and sitting on my knee but hates to be held too. They have never bitten me.
Other people may have other experiences but I only have experience with these two, and they both were very 'damaged' when they came to live with us. I think that if we had had pablo from birth he would be they type that would love to be cuddled but he's just too anxious. I'd definitely get more chinchillas in the future.
We have degus too...they are okay with being held and will climb and play but they do not stay still for one second unless there's food involved!
Hope this helps! x

Hi my friend has a couple of chinchillas and she says that hers like to snuggle with you and that they enjoy running around her living room and jumping up on to her sofa and stuff. I guess it depends on the personalities just like degu. My degu hate contact unless it's ticking there nose or tummy through the bars. Occasionally they will grace me with there presents when out playing but not usually unless i rattle the treat box.

Hmm, I heard that they don't like being cuddled because it makes them too hot because of the fur they already have. Can anyone confirm that? Thanks for replying anyway

They can overheat but I just don't think they like being cuddled because they get constricted I guess. Who knows!

I've had a few over the years and some would be happy to come out and sit on me but others didnt want anything todo with me unless i had food I was never too sure if it was ok to handly too much as i was told the oils from your hands affects the hair (this was over 12 years ago now).

I'd like to have one or two, however they prefer to be kept but I think I'll focus on degus for the time being!

Eh ome thing you can trust about birds is their ability to fly at you as close as possible. But I'd imagine the bird would have been further away than the image shows (zoom and macro lenses etc etc).

Lol I have the smaller scale of birds coming right at you every day, you just have to trust they know what they're doing although Soot did smack right into my dads head the other day (poor bairn gets knackered after a couple laps of the room now - he is 16 after all). I know, professional cameras are massive! I'd probably need to do some weight-training before attempting to pick one up ;D

;D Sounds like a friend of mine that does things like hang out of a car window on the motorway just to get a great shot.
