Great news! You must have been so relieved to see him running around! I think the supervised playtime is a great way to work out when it's safe to put them back together.

Good news the surgery went well, and he's happy afterwards. Do you have a follow up appointment with the vet?
With regards to getting them back together, we were recommended to wait until the wound was beginning to heal. I.e. no longer open. Once it starts to scab, they should have less interest in over-zealousy grooming. But I wouldn't put them back together until the supervised visits show that they have lost interest in grooming the wounds.
In Bill's case, we eventually had to have him fitted for a collar to stop him grooming, as he reopened it twice, even when he was on his own. But to be fair, he had other surgical problems besides his tail, so don't worry this will happen to yours!
Good luck.

So it's been two weeks since Ron's partial tail amputation and things seem to be going well. I did keep Ron & Harry in separate cages (but next to each other) for 5 days while still having supervised playtime. Then I moved Harry into Ron's cage so they could have snuggles. I'm getting ready to move them back into their original cage as the temporary one is pretty small. I think, at this point, it'd be safe to have Ron in a cage where the bottom is lined with shavings. Or should I line the larger cage with paper towel as I have been doing with the smaller cage? Ron's tail does look good and it has scabbed over. Once again, any advice is appreciated!

I would think that 2 weeks down the line his tail should be healed enough to cope with shavings. They aren't that rough/hard are they? So pleased to hear it all went well and Ron and Harry are still best buddies

I agree, his tail should be healed enough to handle the shavings without any danger. I'm sure he will be THRILLED to be back in the bigger cage and having things more back to normal. One word of advice though, try and put in some dirty substrate that smells like both of them . . . if that means that you have to use a couple pieces of the soiled paper towel, then use it, and this way you will ensure that everything smells normal and right to them once they are back in their usual cage.
