Wow those boxes are amazing we are newbie owners and are hoping to use a terracotta shallow pot for now never thought of filling it with their bedding we were thinking compost but this is a much better Idea and it will also give us a brilliant woodwork project too! thank you so much for sharing I can't wait till morning now to get it put together and see them in it our Nibbles especially loves to dig and hid things (he tried hiding some paper packaging today which was funny this was about a ft wide by about 1 meter long! but he gave it his all before resigning himself to chewing off smaller bits and hiding them!)
Thanks again loving the ideas on here and loving trying them all too!
You need to be very careful. The digging enclosure will be dry, so it is likely tunnels will collapse. With something like XL woodshavings, there's a certain amount of free air between the pieces. Soils will fill those gaps, which could lead to suffocation. You could try inserting tubes to assist them.
A mixture of woodshavings, straw and paper would work well. My cage has digging sections, which are adored by Snoozy and Sneaky. Unfortunately, Snoozy sometimes forgets when he's in a different part of the cage.
